I just bought a dell xps 1330. I want to get rid of the dell utility for touchpad as it is not good and i want to instal the synaptic utility. But when i downloaded the drivers and tried installing them the system asks me to uninstall the previous drivers I see "dell touchpad" with publisher "synaptics". I am highly confused. Should i uninstall this ? it'd be great if someone could help me with this installation stuff

    thanks in advance

The XPS's don't use Synaptics touchpads, they use Alps.

when i open up control panel it shows a dell touchpad and the publisher as "synaptics" and also in the device manager it shows "Synaptics PS/2 port pointing device". I guess i have the synaptics one.

Uninstall the Dell Touchpad. then install the Synaptics one. Works for me.

Wow. From what I understood most people got Alps touchpads. Maybe Dell is changing them up due to complaints?

Are you referring to the M1530 or the M1330?

Both. From what I had read/seen across these forums users of all of the XPS-line complained about Alps touchpads.

My M1330 has the Synaptics touchpad.
I think it's only the M1530 that has the ALPS.

You heard....correct. The Alps stinks, though someone on here claimed that installing the synaptics driver with the Alps touchpad made it work much better, though most of the whizzy features were lost. I'd just be happy with a touchpad that tracked properly.

How do you check that it's an Alps touchpad?

What "whizzy" features? I thought the XPS 1530 touchpad was very basic, with nothing much on it.

    Device manager...

find the touchpad entry and find open the property box. it will tell you who manufactured it.

I think the scrolling features might be what was lost. Like I said, it was another guy's report.

Yeah, I see Synaptics. Just curious because it's the first time I've heard of Alps being used on the M1330.
