Is there some techical reason why the i5 processor cannot be paired with 5730 graphics card? Or, has Dell simply chosen not to offer than combination.

On the Canadian site at least, the 5730 graphics card is available only with the i7 quad processor.

They probably have chosen not to allow that choice. I really don't like how they do that. For example, I can't seem to choose the FHD screen without a bluray drive.

I haven't tried to call yet to see if I can customize it the way I actually want as opposed to the limited options on the website :(

There are many possible reasons it isn't yet available.

my random guesses & speculation (I have no inside info):

    1. I believe the motherboard has to be redesigned to accept the card. Since the i7 Quad is in more of a need of a more power efficient GPU partner, this combo was made first.

    2. Dell uses "just in time inventory," but they still could have a few weeks worth of extra 4670s.

    3. There may not be enough 5xxx cards for all the XPS 16s, so the i7 Quad gets it first due to my guess #1.

    4. Dell may want to encourage the sale of i7's for whatever reason (not selling well, short on i5s, whatever)

Well since the SXPS with i7/5730 STILL throttles I hope they start offering an i5/5730 combo. At this point I'd be willing to send mine back in and get an i5 cpu/chipset combo put in for the same price.

On a semi related note, do you just call Dell and tell them that your system throttles, and they replace it? Or do they go through hours of problem determination, replace the motherboard 3 times, and then replace the whole system when it STILL throttles?

I don't really know...I'm pretty sure Dell has no real solution to the problem, and I'd likely have to get passed through at least five people on the phone before I find someone who even knows what throttling is. They can replace the unit all they want but at the end of the day the symptoms will be the same unless they change the bios, power adapter or some other system spec.

For as little as I actually do game on my laptop, the only way I would go down to the i5 series is if there were an ssd upgrade

I believe they have not enougth gaphicchips.

i5 with HD5730 are available in Malysia and Singapor.

In complete europe you can't get a HD5730.

So is the 5xxxx Series running a lot cooler than the 4670 series?

I doubt its a technical reason, its most likely due for sales, more profit that way.
