I'm thinking about buying the xps 15 but i cant decide between the i5 or i7. I will be using it to play games a lot and although the i5 is cheaper i dont want to have to buy a new computer again in say like 4 years. The i5 is about 200 dollars cheaper though.

The 2630QM is quad core...

i am afraid you would have to specify your requirements in a more elaborated way...e.g what kind of games you want to play (cpu intensive or not)...further, are games your only concern or you want to use your system for other cpu intensive tasks too...like virtualisation, 3-D designing etc....also specify the budget that you are running on....
after that I am sure the forum members would be able to help you in making the best decision...
Good Luck... -
for notebook with game, you can't use 4 year.after 4 year you display card play game much slow ! and notebook can't change display card.
may you buy notebook with Nvidia GTX580 up or ATI HD6990, or SLI may you can faster 2-3 year. GT540, 555M No ways.
computer Game is a first market, if game computer 4 year can faster new games. how IT people gain money ?
Notebook gamer only for rich people. -
I bought the i5 2410m. I'm satisfied with it for now. But when I need a faster cpu, it's possible to change it to any sandy bridge processor. So when you are on a budget, buy the i5 and when you find some money later on, replace the i5 with an i7...
It's perfectly possible that you discover that the i5 is enough for your needs. -
thanks for the advice but laptop cpu's are actually non replaceable
-
You can replace this laptop's CPU with another SB CPU if you want to later, but I say go with the i7, more future proof.
-
I thought the cpu's are in there for good?
Sorry I'll add some more info. The games I'll be playing will differ. I have starcraft 2, Napoleon total war, ETW, Dead Rising 2, and WWII Online which a lot of you have probably never heard of.
I also want to make sure I am able to play new games that come out. A lot of them I see the reccomended settings be a quad core. Are quad cores in laptops as good though? I think I remember seeing something that said "will not work on quad core cpu's" for a game requirements.
My budget is no higher than 1,100
ok I guess I was wrong. You can remove the processor.

They're easily upgraded. Please see my guide in sig.
-
First, make sure you get the 1920x1080 display upgrade. If you don't get the screen upgrade, then you're just wasting your money on the XPS 15. The stock screen is junk, both quality-wise and resolution-wise (you can't fit much onscreen because things are huge), but the 1920x1080 B+RGLED display is one of the best laptop screens available. Get the 1920x1080 display before you think about upgrading the processor. Do not buy the Dell XPS 15 with the WLED 1366x768 720p screen, you must have the 1920x1080 B+RGLED 1080p screen in your config before you even think about buying it.
And if you're getting the 2630QM, and you're buying from the USA, use the $1099 base model. It includes the 1080p screen (a required upgrade), the 2630QM, a 2 year warranty (versus 1) and the blu-ray drive, because it's cheaper than just adding the upgrades to the $799 model. -
Current i5-2410m vs i7-2630qm already out-of-day.
you can wait 4 month, new proccesor ivy bridge release. US economi problems, IT product very fast for refresh.
just 5 month(sep 2011 start, now). I5-2410--.I52430 , I7-2630QM-->2670QM, I7-2720QM--->2760QM, I7-2820QM-->I7-2860QM(same price).
Then I7-2760QM Faster the I7-2820QM.
check here(dell), same price before, but all cpu free update:

I woud get the i7, dont see the point in waiting for a next gen to come out, if you keep waiting for the next gen you will never get one.

4 years is quite a while... and you'll want quad core if you're trying to future proof for that long.
If you want to play brand new games in 4 years... well, the video card will probably be lacking by then.
hy kind of games do you like? Some are processor intensive.... (RTS games like Supreme Commander, as an old but still relevant example). Then again, some like Minecraft don't even support multiple cores.
The i7 QM is a beast right now. Look up benchmarks comparing the two processors: PassMark CPU Lookup
You'll have to search that list, but the CPU benchmark for the i7-2630QM is twice as much as the i5-2410m.
