Is having an i7-920XM (55 W TDP) in an SXPS 1645 a good idea? I understand that the TDP of the 720QM and 820QM are both 45 W, but do you people think the extra 10 W required to cool it will pose some risk to the other components?

If you have a notebook cooler, it should be fine. TDP isn't that accurate for measuring real power consumption and we have yet to see the cooling capacity (heat dissipation ability) of Dell's new heatsink, so it's hard to say how it would be without any external cooling.

I would agree with a notebook cooler. Only if you are running on high performance and stressing it. I would think it would be fine idleing and doing simple tasks like web browsing and such.

Is gaming (CoD 4 and 6, Crysis, NFS) considered stressing it?

Yes in a way it will be but you can put in balance mode and still play games at great pace with the cooler due to the turbo mode which makes it awesome.

Hmmm I see, still kind of hesitant, don't want to risk a few thousands of dollars ...

I might chicken out and end up asking for the 820QM unless I see some reviews of the laptop with a 920XM.

It was originally available with the i7-920XM, so I assume *someone* managed to order one with it. IDK if Dell downgraded them to the 820QM and refunded the money, but definitely all three were available on launch.

If they're offering it for free, get the 920XM. TDP isn't an accurate measure of power consumption, it won't consume 10W more than the 820QM. If you're worried about heat, get a cooler for <$50 or make one.

In theory, yet to be proven.

OK, the Dell Canada rep just ordered the i7-820QM from the Dell USA internal tool and he is waiting to see if it gets approved. If all goes well, I should get an 820QM with 6 GB of RAM now!

    Fingers crossed.
