agreed with msire, I'm using 7 on my 1340 and everything installed without much trouble at all... you'll find drivers on either the manufacture website (nvidia) or directly from dell... use the vista drivers and the right version depending on if you're installing 32 or 64 bit. You might have problems with the "coprocessor" driver, which will need to be downloaded from dell.

Just installed Windows 7 and it seems to be very stable and my media keys always work. Also the audio doesnt crackle anymore. The only thing that I am worried about is that my "gaming graphics" score dropped from 5.4 to 4.7?!? ! The weird thing is that I have actually noticed better gaming performance with the Win 7 OS. Also, all the other scores have increased quite a bit especially the processor. Is there a new scale for the Windows Experience Index? I don't even know why I care about the score but for some reason I do. I am using the latest Nvidia drivers and 64 bit.

I wiped Vista and installed 7 Pro RTM 3x, nothing really wrong, I started w/ 64 bit and tried 32 bit, then went back to 64 bit.

One thing I added to the system was a Novatel WWAN PCIe card but otherwise the system is stock. I used mainly Dell's drivers including Nvidia's for the Vista 64. The rest I just let windows update to obtain. I did load the synaptics_v13.2.6.1.

So far everything works well and I think for an initial release, Win 7 is very good. The ONLY issue I have yet to figure out is that sometimes my control panel hangs (Explorer.exe) and only when I execute Control Panel, this requires a program close and it is gone for a while, this happens may be 20% of the time I launch CC, may be some non-native CPL items....

So far the 1340 is running rather well....

If you have 4GB+ on your machine, you should really be using 64-bit. Of course unless you have a crucial program that absolutely won't run properly.

Also, it's good to use Windows 7 Drivers where possible (Chipset and Video).

Yep, WEI is a bit more harsh on things, but it can also go up to 7.9 instead of 5.9 now.

Assuming you have the 9500M GE, that number is a bit low. I suggest installing Nvidia's latest drivers (either 186.81 from Nvidia's site or 186.12 from Dell's M17x site). Windows 7's WEI is a harsher grader than Vista's WEI (which actually makes it somewhat useful as a basic benchmark IMO).

The same thing happens on my unit as far as intermittent CPL hang, with either Dell or Nvidia drivers. But the events do not show up under Action Center so it is a bit harder to track down...

UPDATE - It appears to be the Dell WLAN package - specifically bcmwlcpl.cpl. It seems working fine when using what WIN 7 loaded....

can you tell us your WEI in windows 7? I have vista 64 bit installed and the WEI came out to be 5.3 for gaming graphics. 5.4 for processor and 5.9 for the rest.
Another friend of mine bought a dell studio 15 with windows 7 and he outscored me in almost every field except one. I feel weird !!

Also, is there any way to improve WEI ? I have DDR3 memory 4 gb, P8700, 320 gb HDD @7200 rpm, and NVIDIA GeForce 9500 with hybrid SLI . \Thanks.

i hope i'm not thread-jacking, but i have a question regarding ethernet connections and Windows 7: are you guys able to use your ethernet connections after waking the laptop up from sleep mode? i'm not. it didn't work with the OEM Vista Home Premium, Vista Ultimate and now Windows 7. all drivers have been updated to the latest versions and still no "ethernet love" after waking from sleep mode. ethernet works fine after resuming from Hibernation). Dell tech's validated the issue (via remote connection to my laptop), concluded that this is a system board issue (vs BIOS or OS) and are shipping a replacement board. hopefully this will fix my issue. any feedback would be much appreciated.

aside from this one issue, everything else is working as it should with Win 7 Ultimate (64-bit). thanks for reading/responding to my post.

You're gaming graphics score isn't bad but your CPU score seems low. For my P8700 I am getting a 6.2 with the only listed difference being I have the 500GB HDD @ 7200 RPM. I'm surprised my P8700's subscore is only 0.1 behind that of a P9600 o_O.
