Cool, I just want to know did you have to do anything or did you just pop in a Windows XP disc and it did it just find the drivers. I have heard about issues with XP on new system? Is it the 32-bit version?

ha ha pretty nice guys.... the drivers for windows xp are not present on the dell site...

any how this is how i installed windows xp on my machine...

i downloaded nlite.... and then integrated intel chipset drivers into the windows xp sp3 i have....

    then the installation went well...

i installed ati xp drivers.... from device manager....
bluetooth drivers... dell studio 1555 bluetooth drivers...
wireless lan also dell studio 1555 drivers...
card reader also dell studio 1555 drivers...
broadcom lan drivers also using dell 1555..
touch pad drivers got it from synaptic site...

the two things that i cant install are the dell idt audio drivers... and quick set button drivers...

is there any way we can mod the existing dell 1555 drivers... so that we can get them to work it on dell 1645....

Such a waste. XP couldn't really utilize dual core systems properly. You're packing a quad! It's like...wow I can't come up with an analogy other than what you've already done lol.
@ Bluejake lol I am in agreement.

Honestly... you should of gone with a lower end laptop if you were seriously just going to install xp on it...

Windows xp does not utilize multiple cores like windows 7 does... So you're basically just wasting your money by using XP.

Windows 7 is the best thing microsoft has made in my opinion..

Personally, I have installed windows 7 on my inspiron 1721 (from 2007), and it runs wayyy way wayyy faster than vista and xp ever did on it.

On a newer machine like what you got, it would be insanely faster than xp or vista.

What's with all the hate? Vishnusivathej simply wanted some help getting all the drivers working for XP on the XPS 1645. And the result? The same, "OMG UR ST00PID" remarks I saw when Vista came out, and all the early adapters were busy praising it as the second coming while deriding the people who thought it was (rightly so) a stinker. If OP wants to install XP, or Linux, or hackintosh, why should it be such an uproar? Maybe he's not impressed with Windows My Little Pony Edition, aka Windows 7. :p

I now have a 1645, and will be making note of the info provided by vishnusivathej and kunal2sh. Thanks guys.

ya ya have been using the microsoft operating systems.. for the past 12 years.... i can say that windows xp is the best... windows 7 is good but the memory it uses is very high.. and when u r running the applications like vmware that too with 2-4 operating systems... windows 7 lacks speed..... and is not fully compatible with the old games and apps as well...

Windows 7 does not lack speed... it has been benchmarked faster than windows xp many times.... And since you have a new system, it should be even faster... as it is designed for multiple cores, Windows XP is not.

the overall story is, you wasted your money, but if you're happy with that oh well.

well..firstly how did u get the speakers working? i mean what drivers did u use? because then i can maybe have a clue how to get the mike working. There is a same thread about HP DV7 where the speakers work but the mic wont.
    @qwertybot
    No probs! Your welcome

By the way there is windows xp mode for the apps that or not compatible and knowing the application market. am sure that "Windows 7 Compatible' certified apps will be released.

I didn't mean to sound like I was bashing him for installing XP, I love XP to death but it was written 10 years ago! Back when the common processor was a single core Pentium. What I, and most other people are saying is that running XP so much of the power he payed for might as well be flushed down the toilet, I don't think the devs at MS were writing XP for a processor 10 years in the future with 4 cores/w hyperthreading. I'm just confused as to how the OP believes the performance will be better.

If Windows XP is so much important to you, may I suggest using the XP mode by downloading it from MS Website (Assuming that your XPS 1645 came with Win7 Pro which is the default OS in India). I tried it just for the heck of it though I really don't need XP anymore and it worked like charm with all the drivers. It may be slightly slower since it runs on Windows Virtual PC but definitely worth the effort giving the best of both worlds.

sorry to revive such an old thread, but i need to install WinXP to do some native testing that Windows XP Mode can't handle.

I popped in my usual Windows XP Pro SP3 CD, but after a short while of loading drivers from the CD (screen is blue with the grey "resources" bar at the bottom of the screen) I get a BSOD with the "STOP" error command.

This same CD will work perfectly on my desktop (home and work) and my old HP NC6400 laptop. It just doesn't work on my 1645. Has anybody come across this BSOD before? If so, how did you get around it? I am trying my hand at another CD in a few days, but I would prefer to use my own media where possible.

    Thanks!

To everyone jumping on OP's back for wanting XP:
yes, 7 is great but there are things that simply run better on XP. DVS software seems to be one of them, I get much better latencies on XP 32bit than on 64bit win 7.
