Does anyone have the XPS15 with the intel 460m and geforce 420m and tried playing high intensive games like SC2 and BFBC2 on 1080p? So far the only experiences that I've heard are on the faster intel processor with the geforce 435m.

Without first hand experience, playing new high intensive games as described at 1080p will probably not run very smooth (possibly by turning down the graphics quality consideriably).

For game tests of the Geforce 420M, see NVIDIA GeForce GT 420M - Notebookcheck.net Tech
From those tests it runs well on medium settings (cant see a resolution but can hardly think they test with 1080p as most laptops arent able to utilize that resolution and would thus make a poor benchmark)

I am considering purchasing the Intel 460M & Geforce 420M as well. Im interested in the 435M but unsure on how to get that, will enquire when Dells sales rep calls me back with a hardware suggestion list.

I would've jumped on the faster Intel and geforce 435M if it had Optimus, but because it it didn't and was more pricey, I opted for the 420m.

I did see their tests on the 420m and it was actually using an Asus laptop with 768p ( http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Acer-Aspire-5745PG-Notebook.36947.0.html). For SC2 on medium settings, it averaged 34fps. I could only imagine how much lower the fps would be with a 1080p resolution.

Hi, the 420M can run older games at 1080p no problem, I play Street Fighter IV at 1080p and it runs @60FPS with default settings, newer games like Black OPS run smoother at 720p and the 1080p screen scales down to 720p really well.
It's also very easy to overclock the 420M to 435M speeds using Nvidia System tools, so you can get the performance of the 435M from the 420M and have optimus with the i5 CPU.
I run Black OPS with the 420M OC'd to 650/900 and it runs great!!

You can overclock the 420m with the included Nvidia software? I didn't know that thanks.

I haven't gotten a price suggestion yet so I'm not sure about the price. I dont know how important the Optimus is, I dont care about battery life that much but It would be good to decrease idle-temp.

But the 435 yields almost +1500 points in 3dMark06.

Tough decision but I think that both options are good :)

No worries, you need to download and install the NVIDIA System Tools, this will add a Performance tab to the NVIDIA Control center where you can overclock your GPU:

Get it here: NVIDIA DRIVERS 6.06

Thanks so much! What would you say the highest safest clock the 420m could overclock to?

I'm not sure, I haven't had that much time to play around with it. At 700/900 I was seeing some artifacts in Black OPS, so I just went with 650/900 for the moment till I have time to find the max safe OC for my card. Each card can be different too, so you'll have to play around with your one once you get it. For me 650/900 is really stable and works great, I'm happy that I can get 435M performance out of the 420M :)

Hey, I just installed the NVIDIA 266.35 Beta driver and the performance improvement is amazing.
GT420M OC'd to 650/900 playing Black OPS @ 1080p with standard settings, 28-46 FPS reported by FRAPS!
Before this on the Dell drivers I had to play @ 1024x768 res to keep things playable, super happy with these drivers :)

And Optimus still works with these drivers :)
