sorry for asking this questions again, but i want to here different type of opinions. (helping a friend with his SXPS 16" which he will get from DELL Solution center)

    # is 2GB DDR3 enough for playing DX10 games on a 32.bit Vista home ??? (Bioshock on medium settings)

    # or is it better to install 3GB (single channel) for Vista 32.bit then 2GB dual channel ???

If you can afford it, just pick up x2 2GB sticks. Even though Vista 32-bit wont address a full 4GB of memory, it will cover your needs.

Later, when your system needs change you should consider moving to a 64-bit OS.

well. the only choice he have is 1+1GB or 2+1GB DDR3 (1066mhz) right now.

BUT i read that Vista 32.bit works good enough with 2GB......(true or not ??)

is it better with 3GB or 2GB dual channel when playing dx10 games ????? thats his only concern.

hmm.. maybe u would be still better with the 2+1GB DDR3 cause u can sell the 1GB then buy separate a 2GB..
"is it better with 3GB or 2GB dual channel when playing dx10 games ?"
i think it highly depends on the game itself.. as i heard, vista is a ram-killer, so 2gb might not be enough for some games. i'd also suggest to go for windows 7 64-bit (for case u would have 4gb ram or more), or even xp is much better for gaming.

Why is his only choice 3GB or 2GB? Is this a system replacement or a cost factor? If its a cost factor, go with the cheapest option and upgrade the memory later (always cheaper than buying it from Dell). I didnt think they sold it in a 3GB config - oh well, too tired to look at the site. Regarding, Vista - just in my opinion only - 2GB is not going to be enough. He'll have too much hdd activity from the VM/Swap file. 2GB isn't even acceptable on XP anymore with today's apps (especially games).

its a replacement and he knows very little about PCs :)

he wondering if Vista 32.bit will run better ( especially with games) with 2GB dual channel or 3GB single channel.

i told him im not sure, it might be that SXPS support asynchronous dual channel, (which is similar to ordinary dual channel, just a bit less performance).
so i might think 3GB Ram (single or asynchronous dual channel) will actually have better FPS and higher benchmark scores then "real" 2GB dual channel.

i guess "more" Ram is better then "higher" Bandwidth(less) Ram.

To answer your question, with dual channel its going to be nearly impossible for him to actually perceive a difference. Just my opinion of course. See what others respond with before advising your friend.

At this stage, I think its more important for him to get closer to the max 32-bit vista can address (3GB is better in this case).

I ordered a SXPS 16 with 4gb of RAM and wit vista 32-bit.But I don't have my laptop in hand yet.
Did I make a mistake in not taking the 64-bit?
How much RAM will my laptop detect?
I thought there many applications which did not work on 64-bit? Forgive my ignorance if I'm wrong.

ok, i guess we talking about asymmetric dual channel here then. (not same bandwidth as "real"(Symmetric) dual channel, and not as low as single channel, some where between that)

how do you know your PC run in dual channel by the way ???? (long time i used Everest and this programs :))

Most 32-bit programs will run fine on a 64-bit edition of Windows. The general exceptions are, system utilities (like anti-virus) and drivers of which you will have to get a 64-bit version.

Honestly, you probably won't notice the difference between 3.2GB and 4GB of RAM on your computer.

    Hmm ok.Thx for the info.
But in the case where I have a lot of running aps like CAD, photoshop, Itunes, mozilla, for example, at the same time, do you think the laptop will run less fast than it should?

    ok guys.

i told my friend to get the P9600 2.66ghz(6mb cache) & 1GB+1GB Ram____(7200rpm HD, Ati 3670, TV-tuner, 16" 1080p screen he get automatic in his configuration)...................

i think it will perform better in games, then a P8400 2.26ghz and 2+1gb Ram, (hope im right....he he)

also, its easier and less expensive to upgrade the Ram then upgrade the CPU in the future. (P9600 core 2 duo cost ~£350....thats a lot of money)

    DELL is pretty great :)
my friend order is now done, and the computer is now being prepared.
(he got the RGBLED 1080p instead of the WLED 1080p(what can you say, thanks DELL), he also got 3GB Ram + better CPU + TV Tuner card....

everything costed £0.00, not a bad replacement for a old Inspiron with Ati x1400 and 80gb HD........lucky guy :
