?
and is there actually anyway to solve this or is dell planning to release anything?

With dedicated graphics turned off its absolutely fine to use on your lap. Recent BIOS updates seem to have helped a lot. Its been a non-issue for me so far (I bought mine in August)

As long as it runs within specs, then you are ok. If you start to get unexplained errors, then I would worry.

but how long can you actually keep it on your lap before it becomes to hot? and does the palm rest get too hot it's uncomfortable?
-
8 hours on power saver, 15-20 minutes on high performance
My palm rest is always cool, not sure how others get hot, but I guess for some people it does. -
Personally I wouldn't plan on using the laptop directly on your lap for long as it can heat up quite fast. For me at least, the laptop's heat isn't a problem when placed indirectly on my lap (e.g. on a book, tray, etc.).
The main time it rapidly heats up is when the 9200M GS is enabled. The tray only becomes what I would describe as hot if I am doing something stressing both the CPU (on high performance mode) and GPU (with both GPUs enabled) for an extended period of time (at which point internal temperatures rise quite a bit as well).
is heating a big problem for the studio xps 13?
