After reading the title, I think we need to define 'cool' here.

Could you run 3dmark05 or 06 or a stressful game and monitor both the CPU temperature and GPU temperature. If you have already done this can you tell us what the max temp was?

Ok, that's about 84c. That's a bit hot and it probably means that your heatsink compound is failing. It's very common on these M1530's. For those of us that have removed the heatsink, cleaned it up, and reapplied thermal compound we went from temps of 85c and higher to max temps of 75c.

Before I did the mod my GPU was hitting 85c and higher and each time the GPU would downclock. You really want temps of 80c or lower and the downclocking will stop. Myself, joeytav, and stepintoliquid are just three people on this forum that had the exact same symptoms as you. We all replaced our thermal compound and fixed this problem. There are lots of others who have done the same.

I'm not saying that you should do this mod. Do you have experience with this kind of thing? If so, then go for it - you will solve this problem yourself.

OK, thank you for your honesty. I would rather someone tell me that they are a noob than them act like they know what their doing and brick their machine.

This problem requires removing the heatsink.

    1. Do you still have a warranty?
    2. Do you have steady, careful hands?
    3. Do you have any experience taking apart electronics?

Edit: The same thing can happen on the M1730. I think Dell has a major production problem with their application of heatsink compound. Hopefully some M1730 owners that have dealt with this will chip in on this thread.

If you can dismantle a PSP, put it back together, and it works, that's pretty good skills.

    Unfortunately, after going here:

    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xpsm1730/en/sm/sysboard.htm#wp1032627

It looks like the M1730 is nothing like our M1530's. For the M1530 all we have to do is pull off the bottom cover and we have access to the cooling assembly. For the M1730 it appears that you have to pull apart the whole system and remove the system board to get at the heatsink.

That changes things. If you have never removed a system board from a notebook, then I would have to recommend that you not do the procedure. There are just too many things that can go wrong.

On the other hand, I have read accounts of people doing this mod and having great success. You just really have to know what you're doing to pull this off.

I'm going to say use your warranty on this one. If you are very brave and have the skills then DIY. It's your call just be advised that you have been warned about the complexity of this job.

Keep in mind that the newest NForce drivers do not equal good gaming performance. Some of them are better for video/media playback. Look for drivers that are better suited for gaming.

try to go for 185.20 which looks promising.
you can get it here for vista 32 or here for vista 64.
Before you install them make sure that you uninstall your previous video driver, and ideally, boot in safe mode, run ccleaner or driver cleaner.net (to completely remove the old video driver) and then install the new driver that i provided.
Also, i'd like to state that 84C degrees is pretty much standard on a m1730. if you lift the back of your laptop while gaming to allow better air flow, the temps will drop to the high seventies - low eighties.

yeah, i know how you feel.
first time i had to open my 1710 i was nervous too.
But if you do everything slowly and pay attention to the manual you won't have any problems!
    Good luck!! and report back.

please provide temps, idle and under load. please raise the back of the lappy when you load test it.
anything around 35c for the cpu and 70c for gpu is ok for idle. (the fans are not even working then)
as for under load - well the cpu does not go much higher than 45 maybe, and the gpus should be in the low 80s.

if you are referring to idle temp - it's excellent. if you're referring to temps under load then you have an exceptional lappy ;)
    anyway, you're good.
