    hi all,
i am planning to buy the xps 15 (l521x) around $1200.
i would like to know the life of a laptop.
i mean how many yrs can i expect to run the xps 15 WITHOUT any repairs?
can it last for 8-10 yrs with repairs?(approx. cost of repairs for this time period?)
i am asking bcoz if the life is not much, then i might buy the cheap inspiron 15r & run it for 3-4 yrs.
expecting answers from users of xps 15...

To be honest, if a laptop lasts more than 2-3 years, then you've already gotten the average usable life from a laptop these days. Business grade laptops are better built and tend to last much longer. We've sold quite a bit of the XPS series, nothing major stands out besides Optimus headaches, but essentially it will boil down to plain dumb luck.

You want to use it for 8 years???
It will last you approx. 4 years, after that it will be obsolete. Otherwise this is a consumer grade notebook even if its top-notch it won't last you the 8 years.

If you need a notebook to last that long, buy a high-end business unit, Dell Latitude or Lenovo Thinkpad, they might last that long. Those will however still become obsolete, and also start at 1500€.

You will be much better off, if you buy some cheapo notebook now for 400-500€ and replace it twice in the 8 year timeframe.

i think they are alot more stable than the previous xps builds (studio xps and 1530 which had problems with overheating). i dont see any forseeable problems and ive had mine for over a year

i expect to use this laptop for another 2 years.

Though I've only had mine for a few weeks, I am inclined to say that the XPS15 could last you that long. I would say that if you don't expect the computer's specs to compete with newer laptops down the road, this notebook would more than suffice as a "family computer" for a good 5 years or more.

Repairs would only happen if something breaks. If you treat the computer properly, you shouldn't need any repairs at all.

I think that after 5 years, give or take, hardware is obsolete, but by no means completely useless. You can still use it for other stuff around the house. FOr example, I have a Compaq M2105 with an AMD Sempron processor, 256MB of DDRRAM, and a 30GB HDD. It is almost 7 years old. The hardware is abysmal by today's standards, but I'm still using it for many purposes and it's held up quite well over the years.

I'm still using my old acer travelmate 240 laptop :)
fat and old laptop using a slow pentium 4 proccesor, it is slow for most applications, and the intel video memory sharing make even surf on the net a real pain task.

I'm currently using it as a router since it have two wireless cards I previusly added, I also use it for downloads using jdownloader and samba file server to share two usb HDDs over the network.

the laptop screen still working, however I usually manage it by remote desktop over my home network :)

please do note that i am in india.
i have heard that MBP's have high resale value!
also, if the lifetime is so less then should i buy the 3 yrs warranty?

Just because it has a high resale value (MBP) doesn't mean that you can sell it in 3-4 years for a lot of money.

I have a friend who is stuck with a 2010 MBP because nobody will buy it. Everybody wants the newest and greatest Mac (at least in North America, sorry I'm not familiar with the computer culture in India). That's not even 2 years old too.

When your laptop has reached 3 - 4 years, give yourself a pat on the back because you haven't broken it yet LOL. Like I said, you can find many uses for a 3-4 year old laptop. Since this is a multimedia laptop, it is very well suited for many applications, from a portable HTPC to a light-gaming-in-bed computer. It's also got great speakers so you could use it as a portable stereo.

I have a hp laptop coming up to 5 years this year. Only had to reinstall windows a couple of times. And the optical drive is hit and miss but nothing major.
