Update: I just got my new replacement after waiting quite some time. I have the LCD 2306, which I believe is a Toshiba. I am much happier and the grainyness is gone. I think it's a waste that I had to ask for a new system, all they had to do was replace my LCD with a Toshiba. Oh well.

I'm in the unique situation that I have
    A) A 'new' M1330 w/ the Toshiba Screen
    B) An 'outlet' M1330 w/ the CMO Screen

I want to keep the Outlet because it's cheaper ($133 cheaper) and has more upgrades (3 gig ram vs 1, 250 gig hd vs 120) BUT this CMO screen is a POS!!!!

I'm gonna jump thru the hoops w/ Dell CSRs, but I'm thinking ultimately I'm just gonna have to return the Outlet M1330 :(

I only have the 1 year warranty, so I doubt I have onsite.... grumble.

Why dont you switch the screens between the two laptops yourself ? It's not hard to do at all, and I'm sure Dell wont take the time to investigate whether the laptop was returned with the exact brand of screen that it was shipped out with. Even if they do, you can just play stupid... LOL

    A) Fraud
    B) I don't know WTF I'd be doing / breaking

Btw just got off the 'chat' w/ CSR, a service tech is going to call me in 1-2 days... .ah yes.. the 21 day return window is tick-tocking.

I received my M1330 today and looking at the pictures, I can't tell what this whole grainy stuff is about. What I did notice on my screen though is when white is up or a light colour, I see some sort of "texture" throughout the screen.

I tried to wipe it with a cloth and it doesn't go away and I guess it's not dirt, at least on the outside. It's kind of faint but noticeable at the same time. Sort of like a watermark I guess? Is this what the whole grainy screen is about?

I checked the Dell website and according to my Service Tag, the part used in mine was "RW483 MODULE..., LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY..., 13.3WX, LIGHT EMITTING DIODE..., CHI MEI OPTOELECTRONICS..., M1330" so I'm assuming that means I got a CMO component.

I called into XPS Support and told them about it and they gave me a case number and told me to talk to Customer Service, but it was too late and they had closed. What exactly am I suppose to do with Customer Service and what will they be doing with me?

I called into Customer Service today and they said they're order up a replacement for me. When I asked if just the screen could be replaced, they said because it's a notebook they can't and it'd have to be the whole thing. Seems like such a waste to build a whole new unit when it's just the screen.

there have been many that have had their screens swapped out...so that is strange....probably better than a tech tearing it apart..unless you get someone that has experience doing it...there are horror stories of some screen transplants gone wrong...

OK, this is REALLY getting annoying...

I STARTED with the Toshiba screen on my 1330, then due to garbled graphics, and CPU whine, they sent a tech to change the motherboard, CPU, and LED screen...

Well, after all was done, the CPU whine still there, but the new screen was very very nice (turns out it is a Samsung screen)... The Samsung panels are silky smooth, whites are beautiful. The screen does have a somewhat bluish tint, which you calibrate out and doesn't bother me much...

Well, given the continued presence of the CPU whine, they opted to send me a replacement system...

It came.... and it UNFORTUNATELY has the CMO screen... Wow, now I know what you guys are complaining about.... this screen SUCKS! I'd rather have a thicker non-LED screen than this POS screen! Grainy is the best word to describe it... Not only that, the viewing angles are worse than the Samsung screen, and the max brightness is also lower...

I have them side-by-side so you can really see the difference.. it is NIGHT AND DAY! Oh, guess what, they DOWNGRADED my CPU from T7300 --> T7250 on top of it all!

The only good thing I can say, is this unit has a better fit and finish....

So I'm debating just getting them to swap the screens and perhaps convincing them to upgrade to a Penryn to see if that gets rid of the noise, but NO WAY i'm keeping this screen... I'd rather have the old one!

Don't suppose you could take some pictures of them side-by-side? I know you probably won't be able to capture the grain as it's very minute in detail, but you bring up the differences in brightness.

Well, I got my replacement notebook and it has the same CMO screen with the same grainy problem. I can't decide which one is better, the first one that had more patterns or the second one with more uniform grain.

    LOL

I have the Toshiba LCD2306. The screen doesn't bother me, but I do notice the "texture" at times. I see it best when I have shades of grey slowly scrolling across the screen.

The graininess and blue tint are noticeable with the Toshiba LED and troublesome especially next to my 700m. I noticed the graininess the moment I got the m1330 on I said "what's wrong with the screen?" as I had just been working on my smooth, bright 700m. Viewing angles are very low also. I know I can calibrate the blue out somehow but should I just push to get an LED replacement knowing they can't guarantee which model I'll end up with? The samsung sounds better for me despite the flicker issue - I never dim the brightness anyway. If I knew I would get the samsung, I would insist on it but they may just send another Toshiba and that would be such a waste. I would like to replace the whole machine but it was an outlet purchase and no other similar models have come up yet to exchange with...Your thoughts?

btw finally fixed whine with RMclock and no vista crashes!

He means both m1330 LED screens. They both have the same plastic filter on the front which is what causes the grain.

I've got a Toshiba LCD2306 and a Samsung screen in my possession right now, is there any backgrounds people would like me to take side by side shots of. I can tell you clearly the Samsung is way better, but it whines really really loud out of all 3 Samsungs that I've had when its not on the highest or lowest brightness setting. Anyway, let me know I'll have both til Friday.

Also I'll probably HDTach the Toshiba and Samsung brand 320gb 5400rpm drives, if anyone cares.

also, the 1440x900 resolution screen doesn't have any graininess issues. apparently, only the 1280x800 monitors do. when you upgrade or call for a replacement, maybe you could ask dell about changing resolutions. my new dell 1420 with 1440x900 looks absolutely beautiful.

Having just ordered a m1330 reading these forums has been a bit of a curse...

If I end up with a CMO screen (Or has dell stopped using them) do you just phone up and tell them you don't like the screen? What about Toshiba vs Samsung?

AFAIK, there is only a 1280x800 in 1330. The 1440 is available with only a 1530.

I have the Toshiba and I'm very happy with it. I compared it with a AUO LCD screen on another 1330 and mine is brighter, slimmer and clearer. :)

I just got my dell 1420 with 1440x900 2 days ago. I haven't seen any sign of graininess on my monitor. It looks the same, if not better than the Acer Aspire 5100 I had previously.

Also, there is a thread about m1530 screens, and LG is the best on those.

Wouldn't it be that they just slap on a glossy filter over an existing anti-glare layer which is the layer that has graininess. That would make sense...

Anyway thanks for this very useful thread. I know I will not be buying a m1330 now!.

Oh, and first post. Hi all.

Wow I was supposed to have gotten an LED but was sent a CCFL instead. I had been feeling out of sorts about it. I got the LG and it is beautiful. And the build quality of my machine is excellent. So after reading all this I am grateful I did not send mineback.

My Dell Studio 1537 was ordered with the 15.4" WLED LCD, the hardware ID is SEC5441. I also noticed two dark shadows in the lower left and right hand corners of this display. There are 14-15 brightness levels.

It's only 1280x800 max resolution and is very grainy compared to the CCFL LCD in my Inspiron E1505 (2006 model).
