I have zero problem with vista, but I'm not very happy with my 3.5 hour (or less) battery life on vista (6 cell, powersaver mode, 5/8, BT off, wifi on, office work, no sidebar, no aero, win classic theme...).

But I found some people saying that vista power management isnt very good, and some people saying vista has longer battery life than xp.

can someone who has XP and Vista tell me which "theory"is true???

also i would like to know the performance of both OS on this laptop

    thanx

what kind of battery did you get (6 or 9 cell)? The time actually sounds ok. Did you leave WiFi on?

Sounds pretty reasonable considering your notebook has a dedicated graphics card and not an integrated. You should have gone with integrated graphics if battery life is your priority.

XP is marginally faster than Vista. You can search online for benchmarks if you'd like. Personally Vista doesn't offer anything that I need so I chose XP for better performance, as well as increased battery life.

In that case then, it's quite good. I have XPS1210 with 9 cell battery (t7600, geforce 7400, draft n) and I get about 4.5 hr

yeah i know, but I want to squeeze the limit of my battery lol :p that's why I want to know if XP offers better battery life, if so I'm ready to format :D

I dual boot both XP and Vista on my M1330, and I have found that Vista has longer battery life of about 30 minutes more than XP. I've tried all kinds of different settings, and still, Vista beats XP on my machine.

I get about the same, slightly closer to 4 hours (probably due to the T7100 and LED panel I'd imagine) under Vista with a 6 cell. I haven't heard of anyone getting 4 hours consistently under XP with the M1330, dedicated graphics and the 6 cell.

One of the biggest things Vista has going for it is battery life. That's at least one thing that Microsoft was able to improve on over XP. Dell has recently started releasing Bios updates that tune each machine to use Vista power management even better and extend battery life.

3.5 hrs on 6 cell sounds pretty good.

I can get about 4 hours using Vista with 2-3 brightness, BT of, Wifi on doing a bit of word processing. I also use the windows classic theme and the power saver mode. I also use adblock and firefox because it works better to block heavy flash ads. I have the 8400GS card and the 2.2 processor with a 6 cell battery. Sometimes I block pictures from loading also if it is a thread full of pictures. I also make sure that before I go on battery that I make sure that I am only running the resources that I need to I run on about 55 processes when on battery.

I ran my battery down today I have not in a while and I managed to get 4 hours 25 minutes battery life using the same settings as above but I also disabled the DVD drive and the webcam, sound card (usually i just mute it when i am not using it or lower it) and the Ethernet card. I also had No Script running as well. I was surfing 95% of the time and I also a little bit of word processing. I think that is a very good time and it would improve if I disabled wifi and did word processing alone.

I doubt it if XP could improve on the battery life I have given the specs of my laptop it is getting very good battery life. XP cannot not even handle as much ram as Vista can either.

Does anyone think that to disable SuperFetch is good for battery life ? Coz vista will not read unneeded stuff @ startup.

XP will have longer battery life because it uses less system resource than Vista. Large page files, a lot of services and visual effects reduce your battery life.

One thing to keep in mind is that following an OS installation, XP will be better on battery life. Vista needs a few weeks to adjust to your habits and for the hard disk to quiet down. In power saver mode it's not supposed to excessively use the hard drive, but I found that after a clean install, Vista would still use the hard drive in power saver mode. After a month, batter life improved by about 20 minutes.

This would imply you'll get better battery life running Linux than Vista. Not necessarily true. Vista has some good technology in terms of power management which negates the impact of its large footprint. In other words, Vista has good battery life over older operating systems.

Another thing to consider is that if you slim down your vista to the minimum system, no background processes, Aero off, Sidebar off, Animations off, anything that moves off, there will be a considerable battery increase than if you did the same thing in XP.

this is because Vista supports HPET timers now, so that it doesn't have to interrupt the CPU and bring it out of sleep state every few ms, and instead when it really needs to.

my computer is down to about 100 interrupts a second.

    i finally installed xp...

when it's idle, from RMclock the discharge rate in Vista is about 12 watt, and the clock speed dynamically change to 800mhz only O_O so i got like 3 hours 20 min

when it's idle in Xp, the discharge rate is about 16 watt, the clock speed only reduce to 1.5 ghz, the battery meter show 2 hours 55 minutes

both at minimum brightness, bt off, wifi on

    spec is my sig.

That was the one thing that made me go back to Vista from XP, the fact that the power saving ability is much worse. I get around 6 hours on Vista, but I really couldn't get past 5 on XP even after tweaking.
