I am about to buy an m1330 and I am trying to decide whether to avail myself of the deal on offer right now or to wait until it becomes clearer what the Penryn-related update will consist of.

Are there any news on whether the update will just be a change of CPU or whether there will be more? As far as I am concerned, Penryn is not worth $600 extra, which is what the special offer is, but something like gigabit LAN or higher resolution panels may make me rethink that.

How does Dell normally do this: will they announce the new versions officially before the deals have expired, or will they only do so on the day?

I can't see Dell announcing anything while there are current deals on. Dell wants to sell laptops, so announcing something new will potentially make people hold out buying.

But then there are people who are holding out because they know that deals mean they are trying to get rid of stock.

oh and one more thing. I've heard penryn will be compatible with current motherboards. I am not sure how true that is but can someone please confirm this? Hence buy it with the deal and upgrade maybe 2 years later when u need to

Someone on this forum has a Penryn in his M1330 right now, I forget where I saw it but he's got a screen shot of the BIOS showing Penryn T9500, which means that yes, Penryn will work on some current mobos
