My friend's dell just died, and right after his warrenty expired too
When he got home from work tonight he tried to turn it on only to find it wouldnt turn on. it was plugged into the power brick and blue light was on it.
His battery is fully charged and when he plug's the power cable into the laptop the battery led turns on for a few seconds then turns off :(

Have him boot into diagnostic mode. To do this hold the FN key while hitting the power button.

If it died due to the popular nVidia GPU failure, then your friend can still get it repaired under a special limited warranty program offered by DELL (ONLY covers GPU failures). Does it turn on at all ? Any indicator lights (power LED) or any sounds coning form it (FAN, HDD)? can you see anything on the screen? were there any graphic related problems or blue screens before it died ?
