so my m1330 (T7500) was stolen earlier this week. I'm thinking of replacing it and was wondering if the overheating gpu issue is still happening with the newer models eg the T8300 chips... any advice?

Sorry to hear your laptop was stolen.

No one's too sure if the brand new laptops have a faulty GPU, but the consensus is that they're still probably faulty.

So yes, if you can do the copper mod, I would. You'll have lower temps and hopefully, a longer life! Just save that cooling pad in case you need to revert the mod for a warranty job.

Hope this one doesn't get nicked!

AFAIK they are still defective. i would stay away from them, and get a different laptop. Since the M1330's GPU is last generation anyway. ;)

    Fill out the FAQ. ;)

Sorry - I misread the original poster's post and thought he'd already bought a new one. So kinda ignore my first post :)

ok thanks for the speedy replies, guys.

guess I'm a bit pressed for time - need a replacement fast and there's no compelling alternative that doesn't cost a lot more afaik - any suggestions?

certainly the 1340 looks like it has problems galore so my thought was to get a recent refurb 1330 with a 3 yr warranty on ebay and hope if it fries dell sort me out with a replacement... am I being naive?

Yes, if it fails, they will replace it. But with another defective card.

Take a look at the Thinkpad SL300, x300, HP dv3.
If 14" is an option, look at the Thinkpqd T400 and HP dv4t

ahl395, thanks for those suggestions - the SL300 seems well in budget and a nice machine. I'll keep it in mind! I note though it has integrated gfx, so perhaps an m1330 w/o nvidia could be a (cheaper) option.

Yep. The M1330 with an IGP is a fine choice too. ;)
