check if its your fan... or HD....

same thing happened to me, totally silent, now there is always the fan like sound... i have had no resolution for it yet... even with another HD... im guessing mobo problem or something

Have you tried cleaning out the fan with compressed air?

You know, I don't want to scare you.. but the same thing happened to me. After 6 months, the fan was always on, all of the sudden, no matter what. Needless to say, in a few of days I got the dreaded vertical lines. Hopefully you'll have more luck :) My 2 cents

k, checked whether it is my fan of the hd. did that by cleaning the fan. and it's my hd.... i can still hear the noise, even when i've just turned the computer on and the fan isn't moving...
    any ideas?
aan310, if the same thing happened to you and it didn't stop even when you've changed the hd, what can it be? what's the mobo problem?

    Well, crapp...
you need to go in your bios, then find HDD acoustic mode. change it to quite. That did not help for me, but it may for you...

The only thing i can think of is a mobo issues (hardware, not software)...

I personally cannot contact dell about this issue, because i do not have a service tag, so if you want to do that, that would be good.

and ill make a new thread for us :)

go get I8kfan... check the fan speed

mines always 3000+rpm for idle (GPU ~ 64degC).... it goes to high when GPU passes 77deg

for me I found the problem is the new nvidia driver causing the fan to alternate at max/min speed for no reason .

    This fixed my problem immediately:

    Go to control panel

    then system

In the far left you should see a column labeled tasks

    click device manager

    then click display adapters

and double click Nvidia 8400m GS

click the tab that says driver

    then click roll back driver.

    Voi-fugging-la

    A quiet fan.

if you have an nvidia chip and have run windows update within the past week then chances are the new driver was installed, did you give it a crack anyway?
