I am running Vista Ultimate 64 bit edition and everything is fine. I just installed the 32bit wireless card drivers from the CD then Microsoft Update got everything else I needed - except for the finger print reader which you can download yourself.

I tried this over the weekend, but with limited success.

I was able to blow away the Vista partition and install XP Pro x64, but (as has been posted elsewhere) I first had to change the HD controller in the BIOS from AHCI to ATA mode. Others installing 32-bit XP reported that after installing Intel's chipset driver and Matrix Storage Manager, they were able to switch back to AHCI. I installed the XP x64 chipset drivers, but when I tried to install Matrix Storage Manager, I got a message saying the system doesn't meet the minimum requirements. Gotta love those informative error messages! I tried to switch back to AHCI anyway, and I got a blue screen during boot that disappeared after 1/2 second, so I could never even read what the problem was. Someone else might have better luck or persistence in getting this issue resolved, but even if this doesn't work, it's not a huge loss in performance.

I was able to cobble together most of the rest of the needed drivers from various sources (Dell support site for other laptop models, the HW manufacturer's website, etc.) until there were no more yellow exclamation points remaining in Device Manager. However, I could not find 64-bit XP drivers for the Alps touchpad. The touchpad works with the standard windows mouse driver, but there is no way to change its sensitivity, disable "tap-to-click" functionality, or use the vertical and horizontal scrolling areas along the right and bottom edges. This was a deal breaker for me, because I can't stand tap-to-click, but if you don't mind a touchpad that occasionally registers clicks when you're just trying to move the pointer around, then by all means, go with 64-bit!

I should note that there are 64-bit Alps drivers for Vista, just not for XP. Perhaps it's possible to somehow hack those drivers to get them to work. It's also possible that some small manufacturer out there (Sager, Asus, etc.) offered a system with an Alps touchpad and support for XP Pro x64. I didn't do an exhaustive search for drivers across all known manufacturers, but I can definitely say that no drivers are available from Dell or HP. If anyone does manage to dig up compatible Alps drivers, please post the link!

hi i was wonder if anyone could help with finding x64 XP drivers as i have also installed XP x64 pro on my dell m1530. I was unable to find a working blutooth driver and three ?-base system drivers. i also have an error with the display as the screen resolution changes to low settings every time i turn off the notebook,
i suspect this is an error from the nvidia 8600m GT driver.
any help with any of these issues will be much appreciated

If you have problem with Blue Screen, then it is usually the problem with Video driver. I have tried serveral version of the Nvidia and settle with 174.74 version.

The link is for the Vista 64 drivers. Are they fully compatible with WinXP 64 bit drivers ??

@sunlit - Did you use Vista 64 bit drivers for your fully working copy of Windows x 64 ?

    hi,

@ nikunj_cal: no. just a few drivers i used are vista 64 bit drivers. the rest i picked up from the internet while searching for compatible software running on win xp 64 bit on my dell xps m1530.
but i also need to say, that i bought my notebook in germany. i heard that there are some differences between united states and german xps m1530-notebooks.
therefore i don't know if all the stuff i used will also work for you.
i can upload the whole driver-package on rapidshare, if you want ...

@ imzomnia: no. i don't have a bluescreen. it's all working fine. i only have the problem, that i am not able to install dell media direct 3.5 on my xps m1530 while using win xp 64 bit. the software seems to install itself but at the end there is nothing installed on the system. no dm-directory, no symbol to start DM. if i now try to load DM with this house-key then it shows me a screen which tells me: "BITLOCKER PROBLEM". after this i am not able to start win xp 64 bit anymore. to make it short: the system crashed.

a similar problem i had some time ago when i tried to install simple win xp 32 bit on my dell xps m1530. then i installed win xp service pack 2. and voila. it works. now i was able to install this DM-crap on my dell and it was working.
i also tried to install the win xp 64 bit service pack 2 but i am still not able to install DM. maybe DM needs some special drivers or files to identify. if i knew this i would use this the missing files but i don't know how to get this DM-crap running on my machine.
if anybody knows ... i would be very thankful

    greatz

HI , thank a ton for your help. Downloading the pack right now. However rapidshare speeds are pathetic where I live. If possible could you upload it to any other file hosting site like easy share , filefactory etc ? If not then not a problem :) !

    hi,

@nikunj_cal: yes. i try to upload on another provider. i guess, that rapidshare is very slow not only on your living-location. they changed there website and the whole system, i guess. it's also very slow on my location and i got a 16.000dsl (so it's called in germany).

@all: ok. now i guess, i got the perfect solution for this problem. you all remembered that i had the problem running MEDIA DIRECT together with win xp 64 bit. it just did not work.

BUT NOW. all the stuff works together. i got MD running as well as win xp64 with no problems. for this solution i spent a little time and did some different tests. for me it works perfectly.

the tutorial for getting winxp64 bit and md running i will provide in a few minutes ...

    hi

@nikunj_cal: hmm. dual boot + media direct. hmm. really. i don't know. i never checked out 2 os on my laptop + media direct. but ... usually it should work.

if you first install media direct, then vista 32 bit then configuring media direct and then you take something like partition magic (includes a bootmanager, too) and create a new partition (set on bootable).
then you shutdown your computer and turn it on again with this media direct-button. configure media direct now again. then restart and boot with the windows xp 64 bit. install win xp64 on this new partition and restart again. maybe there is a windows-bootmenu there. then you can choose between vista and xp64. if there is no windows-bootman, download a bootdisk which you can use to set partitions active. set the vista-partition active. restart. vista should start. open the partition magic - bootman-configurator and configure it. now you have a bootmanager on the system-start which you can use to choose between vista and xp64.

    should work.
some time ago i have leopard macOSX and winxp installed on my xps m1530 with a bootmanager. and it worked. both. unbelievable. but i did not install this media direct because i didn't need it and it was no danger because of macintosh. if i pressed the media direct button the system started with a message: "could not load media direct. press a key" or something like this. if i now press a key, the system loads the bootmanager where i could choose between macosx or winxp. there was no need for media direct. so you have to look by yourself if this method i explained will work for you.

    nice greatz

MY TUTORIAL TO GET WIN XP 64 BIT and MD 3.5 RUNNING ON A DELL XPS M1530
    ========================================================================

if you do not want to install media-direct on your xps, then just put in your win xp64bit-cd and install your os. after
installing windows xp64 bit go on with step 9. you don't need step 1 - step 8. just start with step 9.

    step 1)
put the MEDIA DIRECT - cd into you cd-rom-drive and reboot.
choose "1" partition and "y" to create the basic-partitions.

    step 2)
now put in the windows VISTA 64 bit disc (i didn't check out the way with VISTA 32 bit).
install VISTA 64. just the system. no graphic-drivers, sounddrivers and stuff. after you installed
the system, put in the MD-disk again. install media direct now.

    step 3)
after you installed media direct you shutdown the whole system and turn it on again with the media-direct-button
on your notebook (it's this little house-button).
MD is starting. it installs itself now. after MEDIA DIRECT is running, finish it again "exit".

    step 4)
restart the system by pressing the on/off-button on the notebook. win vista starts again.
now there is the tricky part of the whole session. i did not take care of the microsoft dependencies while doing the
    following action.

open the windows-explorer and go to you harddisk c:\
there is a dell-directory. copy this directory now on an usb-stick.

then, go to program files <x86>. there is a further dell-directory. copy this directory, too and paste it on your usb-stick.

after doing this, put in the win xp 64 bit-cd and restart your computer.

    step 5)
install win xp on the c:\ - drive. you can delete the partition c:\ and recreate it again. the most simple way is to
reformat c:\ with ntfs. do not delete or format the other partitions.

    step 6)
after installing win xp 64 start the os now. your xps is starting windows xp 64 bit.

    step 7)
now, copy the first dell-folder, you saved on your usb-stick, back into the same place it was before. that means. copy the dell-
    folder one to c:\> and the dell-folder 2 to C:\programme <x86>\
    do not rename the dell-folders.

after you did this go to
c:\dell\mediadirect\app and doubleclick on setup. the system tells you now, that direct media is already installed on your system.
    therfore. shutdown your computer-system

    step 8)
press the md-button on your xps-system to start media direct. while loading media-direct, a bluescreen with errormessages appears.
turn off your computer again. press again the md-button on your xps. media direct now starts with no problems. from this time on, you will never get the blue-screen and from this time on, md will work without any problems.

    step 9)
now, installing the necessary drivers for win xp 64

    step 10)
    coming next ...

XP-64...Seriously don't bother with it. Stick with 32-bit XP or 64-bit vista as XP64 never really got much support and theres no guarantee software will work with it.

@Stevey5036 how did you get an Alpine white 1530? In the UK at the mo I only see Tuxedo Black, Midnight Blue or Bubblrgum Pink on the dell site lol. Is it available in the states?

    hi

@ nikunj_cal: really. i don't know if there are any other tools like media direct. but i know, that dell only use media direct for its xps m1530

@basskiddanny: you are right. it's a little tricky to get win xp 64 (together with media direct) work on the xps m1530. support from dell ... hmm. looks bad. you are right, too (i guess). i sent an email to dell exactly about this problem (running xp64 on the xps m1530). they told me they will check it out. maybe i will get an answer the next days. maybe not. i will told you my news about it.

the reason why i use xp64 is, that
    a) i have a license for xp64 and i use it for business-stuff
    b) the software i use is 64bit-software
    c) in comparison with vista64 winxp64 is much better in speed, power and handling 3d-applications for our business (no delay, etc. - we tested it). these are the reasons why i am using winxp64 bit on my xps m1530.
but as long as i use xp64 i never had any problems with different applications, my xps-hardware or xp64 itself.

so. i guess. it's an unique stuff. for what you need a special operating-system. if you basically want to play games on your xps you shall install vista32 or vista64. if you need a system for making 3d-models/animations/etc, i guess it's better to use xp64 then.
but that's only my opinion and my experience with it.

    :)

I currently use my xp64 solely for playing games. I have an added advantage of playing 64 bit games along with 32 bit games , which is not available with 32 bit os . Thanks for your help sunlite. I read thru some other threads in this forum also. They have mentioned that it is very much possible but I will have to wipe out my hdd and start from scratch. I am not very keen on doing that for the time being.

MediaDirect is not just a software, it is a stripped-down Windows XP Embedded. You can use some linux-based media-oriented kind of OS instead of it. You may read some info here.
