m1530 actually supports DDR2 800 memory (NBR Staff Note: Not Really)

According to Dell the m1530 supports only the 667mhz ddr2 sdram, but after a scan by Crucial, it appears that the 1530 can handle the 800mhz DDR2 rams (no, not the sdram, normal DDR2) without a problem. The 1530s come with the crappy Samsung(does Dell like Samsung or something? Samsung Screen, Samsung Memory, Samsung *blah* *blah* *blah*)667mhz ram, which really isn't the high-performance memory module for games and memory intensive applications...

So I searched online for 800ddr2 rams and have stumbled across this OCZDDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) dual channel ram. OCZ has the reputation of producing OC-able memory modules, and I am currently using it for my desktop, and the ram does provide superior performance than...say...corsair or even crucial, and definitely Samsung...

Apparently this guy(in the reviews section for the product) on newegg has purchased this OCZ ram and installed on his m1530 and has reported increased performance with OCZ, so I'm thinking of buying that for my lappy...

My question is this: are there any benefits for using the SDRAM? Since Dell doesn't seem to sell the ram cheap ($100 for 2gig as opposed to $76 for 4 gigs of OCZ), I wonder if the SDRAM, running at a lower clock speed, is still better than the OCZ one....

The current Santa Rosa chipset supports 800 MHz RAM, but will downclock to 667. Plus there are reports of some computers not booting with the 800 RAM.

Stick with 667. There's no point in buying 800.

Yea, what Lithus said. Santa Rosa is 800Mhz DDR2 ram COMPATIBLE, but it doesn't mean it will run at 800Mhz. If you buy 800Mhz ram, it'll be downclocked to 667 (just like Lithus said). If you want greater than 667Mhz ram speed, you better wait for the Montevina platform due out in a couple of months.

It wouldn't have been that big of a mistake sine your notebook would still run it at the right speed and it's about the same price as 667mhz ram now.

Wicked 3DMark06 scores you have. Do you have 3DMark06 "ORB" link to see all the details?

Hey Shawnhao, how did you OC your CPU AND GPU to get that 3DMark score? that is like almost double it originally, does it get hot? Wanna share?

I'd also like to know how you OC'd your CPU. I'm assuming you used the SetFSB program? Which PLL ID did you use? None of them worked for me.

As its on a Santa Rosa platform, the chipset on the M1530 only supports DDR2 PC5300 (667mhz) RAM.

    Documented on intels site...

    hope this helps,

Explain why Dell has been offering 6GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz (2 Dimms) on the XPS M1530.

they bought 800mhz RAM sticks and ran out of 667mhz.... and that 800mhz sticks were cheaper

it downclocks, ok?>... the motherboard cannot run it at 800mhz
