    Hi all,

a few months ago, had the dell tech come in and replace the mobo on my overheating m1530..
in the process he had to take everything apart incl the screen and put it back after the new one was installed.

question: just wondering, does your screen turn off after you close the lid while its on?

mine doesnt, and im wondering if it has something to do with the sensors on the lcd (if any).. or is the screen not supposed to turn off when you close the lid?

    thanks in advance :)

I think this is a software problem (i had the same problem), try to reinstall bluetooth driver or call dell support =)

It can be changed by going to power options in the control panel and choosing when you want the display to turn off and what you want to happen when you close the lid.

Only options for "When I close the lid" in power options are:

    Do nothing
    Sleep
    Shutdown

I have it set to "Do nothing", but even if I close the lid while its on, shouldnt the LCD still turn off anyway?

EDIT: I changed the setting to "Sleep", closed the lid, and nothing happened. Obviously something wrong with the sensor or whatever detects when the lid is closed..

anyone know if there are sensors in these screens? or how the lid works

there are no physical sensors(you know, like a tab that becomes depressed when screen closes.... no such thing...).... there isn't a hinge sensor either(i've taken apart the display assembly, didnt see anything like that)..

so i guess its like a proximity sensor? im not sure

There is a magnetic switch. There is a magnet in the lid next to the camera, and a corresponding magnetic switch/sensor in the palmrest next to the touchpad.

Yes, your screen should turn off when you close the lid even when set to 'Do Nothing'.

Your technician probably forgot to re-connect the sensor/switch in the palmrest.

Either call Dell to have them resolve it, or if you are adventurous, you can fix it yourself. Find the service manual on how to remove/replace the palmrest and ensure that the small cable for the sensor is firmly attached.

    or u missing magnet.. u can try it with some screw or scissors.. just go with something metal arround left side of webcam {app. 5 cm , 1 cm left from black plastic bumper}
U have to feel magnet. if is not there. u shoud call dell for fix.

The options for "When I close the lid" in power options shoud be: Do nothing

Thanks all for your replies :)

    You're right.

Just for the record for anyone that has the same problem:

The tech changed my settings to "standby" when I close the lid, then got me to run a magnet around the top left side of where the webcam is located and she said it should trigger a signal to be sent to the laptop thatll tell it to stand by. She told me to do the same thing to the bottom "sensor" located beneath the top magnet near the edge (which I found to be very weak, or nothing was there).

With both scenarios, my laptop did nothing.. so theres obviously something wrong.

    Anyway...

I called Dell and they're going to replace the palm rest for me as there seems to be something wrong with the sensor under there.

They even remote desktop'd into my laptop to make sure.

I also asked if they could include new stickers (the intel centrino and windows vista ones on the right) but they said they usually get the tech to transfer the old ones onto the new palm rest. It might turn out ugly.

Anyone had similar experiences? If the stickers dont look like what they look like now on the new palm rest im going to ask for new ones (the rep was hesitant not to send me new ones as they 'come from the factory')

It turns out the earlier tech forgot to connect the sensor wasnt ... so the tech fixed that and now its working fine :)

Good luck with getting it sorted.
I have to ask though, am I the only one that rips these things off as soon as possible? Pretty much the second thing I did when I got my m1330, after turning it on that is...

Those magnets seem to be the biggest headache for the display assembly. I have seen the magnets not sitting properly in a new XPS M1530 even. I can understand some difficulty with it, but then again, I feel that you should not leave a site until you are done with a job 100%. Anywho, when you close the lid the computer will either turn off the monitor, or if a setting is there, turn off the computer/standby.

The magnet was a problem for me as well. Somehow the magnet came off the glue that used to hold it to the lcd assembly. Now it does not want to stay in place and pushes the bezel out by a small amount. However hard i try to push the bezel back in place, it has a bulge near the camera...
