I had a slightly different problem with my touchpad. It would randomly stop working. Then about 2-3 seconds later, it would start up again. Had the Dell tech out to fix it today... waiting to see if the problem occurs again.
-
I am allmost sure this must be a driver issue (at least I hope so) because by disable'ing the fingerprint reader (in Vista premium) my touchpad is much more responsive, although still not perfect. Or maybe by disable'ing the fingerprint reader it might also be hardware related.
xps 1530 -
Thanks,

It only happens after your start using the computer after you open the lid. The magnets in the frame seem to screw up the touchpad for about 20-25 seconds. The touchpad gets a false reading in the top right corner. The only solution as of right now is to wait it out till it fixes itself.
-
*sigh*
I have this too on a brand new one I got today.
I don't know if the original OS had it or not, I didn't notice.
Although it seems to be hardware, here's me: Vista 64, Alps drivers with the synaptics installed previously (it didn't give me scrolling on the sides and stuff?)
This is going to drive me insane, I use my laptop a lot and I close it a lot.
How many of you have called dell on this and *****ed to someone higher then the first level of tech support? I'm prepared to spend a long time on the phone on monday.
For me sometimes it'll seem to be working again, then it'll be broken for 10s, working for 2s, broken for 10s, working. Driving me insane. -
-
Engadget or Gizmodo might be interested....... One of them (dont remember which) often talks about m1530 users not getting the penyrn. -
I have the same problem on my 1530. I had my palmrest unit completely replaced with a brand new one and that still didn't help, same problem. I'm sending my 1530away for a new one, hope that helps - but by the looks of it with how common this problem is, it won't help.
We honestly need a fix for this...
Try this...
Close, then open lid. Notice where the touchpad is sensing being touched and tap it a few times. I taped on both the top right and top left corners intermittently but fast and a bit hard. Fixed my issue sometimes after 2 seconds. It's a bit inconsistent though... -
I've put this on ideastorm. Sign up for an account and promote it so hopefully someone at dell with some power will see it:

Dell replaced the touchpad but I have the same problem with the new touchpad.
FYI - I have XP on this machine and still have the problem with touchpad, so I think we can rule-out the operating system being the problem since so many Vista people are having the same issue.
I also reinstalled the drivers, which didn't help. -
try this ...........the guy in it seems convinced that it works.

I'm gonna be calling dell on monday about my lcd as well, I got the grainy one
Either way, I'm going to try and get them to replace the touchpad once before I try to ***** too much. Can't expect them to listen if they haven't tried replacing it first.
Again, go vote! http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/10077695/Fix_the_M1530_touchpad -
Ok, so it's not the magnet.
With the magnet removed and the front bezel of the lcd off still, it STILL happens.
This means that when I close it, windows stays on. It's oblivious to me closing the laptop, meaning it's not possible that this is being caused by the drivers.
At this point I'm going to have to guess that electrical noise from the lcd inverter is the cause which means that I can't think of any easy solution to this problem.
DELL, WE NEED YOUR HELP.
I've heard of this happening on the m1330's as well, does anyone know if the led backlight models are affected? -
Wow, this has ben going on for far too long. I felt sure I'd come in here to a solution.
-
Anyone got any updates on this yet ?
Ive emailed UK dell and await a response. It really is annoying for a laptop of this value. I mean my £200 Inspiron 6000 works sweet and never plays up at all. -
This is the response I got from dell on friday, I didn't bother posting it here because I was expecting them to come and post:
-
haha i got the same email
I didnt wanna be rude to the tech guy but i said i know before i try it wont make a dogs ass of difference.
-
With my personal details removed, here is the email I just sent to dell:
-
Nice email Shad0w. Hope it all goes well.
-
Yeah nice email
Lets hope we get some response fairly swiftly
Cheers -
Thanks Shad0w! I've had my touchpad replaced and although it's MUCH better than before, these alps touchpads are simply garbage. I've used five m1530's and the touchpads are just too cheaply made. They need to replace them with Synaptec touchpads because alps is simply lacking quality (both in the hardware and software).
-
I never use a touchpad on ANY of the notebooks I've owned. I've always used a mouse. Currently a very small wireless one. Therefore... I don't have a touchpad problem.
-
i was opposite, even when i had a mouse available, it was just so much more convenient to use the touchpad cuz it's right next to the keyboard and i often need to press keys while i use the mouse. now i'm stuck using my Logitech G5 laser mouse for windows (when before I only used it for games). It's frustrating. I feel like I'm driving a Ferrari without seats... all this amazing hardware, and i can't properly enjoy it cuz the interface was skimped on. way to go dell
-
I just got off the phone with Ian George at dell canada's executive office.
He's going to send me a new machine and pull mine back to red rock for analysis. He said he'd be reaching out to the forum users and pulling back more machines so they can figure out the cause.
I feel pretty confident we are going to get a fix, but it might take them a bit. Now just a bit of patience while they sort it all out and we should be good -
hey everyone - is it possible to disable horizontal scrolling w/out having to disable vertical scrolling at the same time?
EDIT: ugh i've just realised that i have the problem too but always thought it was due to me having a slightly sweating thumb or finger on the touchpad and just wipe it down like crazy (i.e. not knowing that i was using the workaround to the touchpad problem)
should I call up dell and have them send a techy or something? And by the way - those ppl who suggest to just use a mouse so they dont run into the touchpad problem, how exactly are you meant to use a mouse if you're out and about somewhere and are using the LAPtop on your lap? -
what works for me is that when touchpad goes crazy (after opening the lid fe) i just double click in upper right corner of the touch pad. that seems to fix it..
-
it doesn't fix it, just a simple work around as with the other methods mentioned. but with that in mind, it's pathetic that the touchpads actually do go spastic
-
I fixed mine
I gave it to the misses and am buying a 1730
She can wait to see if and when there is a fix , i cant be arsed
Part from that its a good little laptop -
just posting my interest in this thread, happens on mine too
from my experiance i think its got something to do with heat, even with programs running or out of hibernation mode/sleep mode which is always been disabled still plays up for a few seconds.. -
Anybody think it has something to do with the magnetic on the top of the lid?
When I open the lid and look at the touchpad icon in the taskbar it looks like some areas are being reported as being pressed down when they aren't and after 30 seconds finally disappear. I would guess that the magnetic is causing some sort of interference. -
-
-
hey
I have posted this same question and did not realise this post exsisted, sorry.
I have had the same problem as well and only got my laptop a week ago.
Has anyone had any fixes or anything.
This has only happened to me after closing the lid while the computer is still on, has not happened to me any other time, maybe has something to do with heat or something in the lcd screen that the touchpad does not like. Its not big enough for me to get techs out or, send it back, but can be quite annoying.
Thanks -
The problem with the touchpad is not going to be related to the magnet at all.
My PowerBook has a magnet right below the touchpad, and its touchpad works beautifully. The touchpad on the m1530 is a piece of **** (insert whatever 4 letter word you would like here), and Dell probably knows it.
I really want to be able to say something positive about this computer, but right now, it's almost all negative. (the 3 prong power adapter is nice, I guess...) -
Ok, so here are some ascertations I've made about this problem based on my own experience and trials, and what others have posted here, as well as a brief summary of some findings.
1. I do not believe this is software related. Both driver types exhibit this problem, as do both XP and Vista.
2. It only happens when the lid is closed and the computer is set to "do nothing," sleep and standby do not suffer this problem.
3. It is not contact between the lid and palm rest area that causes this, but rather proximity--in my tests having a gap (or paper, cloth, rubber insert) of about 0.25 to 0.5 cm will prevent this from happening.
4. Playing around with the pad, moving in circles, from one corner to the other, tapping the mouse buttons, etc. may work to cancel out the problem, but these seem wildly inconsistent.
5. Touchpad strokes are registered by capacitance of a finger; that is, the current through the circuit grid in the pad is shunted when a finger acts as a virtual ground, diverting the current, causing the pad to register a touch at a specific location. It is my understanding that only an item with the same capacitance as a finger will trigger this. Magnets do not appear to have any effect.
6. The problem causes phantom strokes which have thus far been observed only in the top left and right corners, which hints at something in that area of the LCD being the culprit.
Therefore, there seems to be two areas that need investigation:
A. What exactly is the difference between "do nothing" and sleep/standby, especially what changes there are in the hardware in the proximity of the pad--the pad itself, LCD, webcam, and any parts of the case.
B. Can the electric fields generated by any of these (I'm thinking the LCD here, but the webcam has thus far been overlooked, and we need to cover all of our bases) fake the capacitance of a finger touching the pad?
I don't really have an electronics background, but I will see what I can do, and I hope this gives some ideas for places to go with this. Looking at the physical construction of the LCD may help, but I haven't enough knowledge to mess with that, maybe someone else does. Good Luck all. -
The A08 Bios update fixes the touchpad:
http://support.dell.com/support/dow...-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=1&fileid=248848 -
Well, that wraps everything here up into a nice neat little package, now doesn't it? See guys, Dell isn't all evil.
-
Hey
I found if you look in your task bar and see the touchapd icon, it shows a blue mark, you tap your finger on it and then it might go to the other side tap you finger on that, I have done this and no more problems when doing nothing when screen is closed.
Also If this is such an urgent update by dell Bios, how do normal people know what is coming out and when and what we should download and update, they have not sent me an email or anything to update drivers like this.
Is it something that you just need to check from time to time, and if yes were can I check these on a regular basis.
Thanks for the hints and links. -

Bios update A08 from 3/5/08 seems to have fixed this issue. So far so good...
-
Fixed it for me. I'm quite amazed Dell actually fixed something.
-
-
I agree with everyone else
This FIXES it
Well done dell -
Must depend on the country your in. I found this solution just now on another site. Dell have told me to restore factory settings. Im glad i found this first. Would have been a right pain if i had restored the factory settings without having to.
-
See, it did not actually fix the problem for me. The problem still occurs... a lot!
I have had dell replace the motherboard and palmrest several times to no avail. They finally decided to send me a new system. Hopefully THAT fixes it.. -
Anyone have any other ideas to fix the problem. Originally it fixed my touchpad issue but i had to have my motherboard and hard drive replaced because of other issues and now the bios update does nothing. Is there a particular driver pairing (for the touchpad and the bios) which stops this stupid problem. The touchpad was not changed when my laptop was fixed so i have no idea whats wrong.
I love my xps when it works and to be honest i have not had it running properly (to its fullest extent) for very long.
at dell.

anyone having problems with the horizontal scroll? it just doesn't work for me period.. vertical works tho
-
The problem is still occurring for me too!!!! I have new bios and latest drivers
m1530 touchpad...
