    Hello,

I'm thinking of buying an m1530 with the 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics card but I'm concerned about the noise the fan will make. I really want a silent laptop. Does anyone who has an m1530 with this graphics card in it know if it causes the laptop to be noisy?

the m1530 is reportedly to have the GPU errors that the whole 8600M line has... it's failure rate isn't as bad as the m1330, but theres a possibility..

dell has given out BIOS updates that cause the laptop's fan to run earlier and faster to prevent GPU meltdown

i'd tell you to avoid the m1530...

Is this the case with the 8400M as well?

    probably....

i would just stay clear of the entire Dell XPS M1330/M1530 line, because of such problems and older generation hardware

look at other laptops with Montevina parts...

the XPS m1530 is still stuck at Santa Rosa, probably no more revisions

I have the 8600 GPU on my 1530....The fan is quiet for me & when it does run..I barely notice it.. I haven't had any prob's with the GPU at all. The GPU also has the extended 1 year warranty: http://en.community.dell.com/blogs/...ment-to-all-affected-customers-worldwide.aspx

I believe the 8400 is affected, also.

The laptop is not noisy...I've owned for nearly 1.5 years, and I still state that it's an incredible lappy. ;) I'm sure other fellow 1530 peeps will be around to give you their input!

If your entertaining getting right now there are a few good deals..(and you can always check the outlet, too) :D

    Click this link

and use this code: Code: ?CW$LX1HPRM3SF (Exp 6/4)
should be for $424 off, valid thru 6/4.

    Hope that helps!

    Cin ;) :)

Yeah, the m1530 is gonna stop being manufactured soon, its a 3 year old model.

I would recommend going for the new studio/studio xps line, but remember its more about how you use it, these computers shut off their fan when in idle, and run the fan on low speeds when doing light work like browsing, watching a movie, music, etc ( does very little noise )

if you want a powerful laptop, then you will have to put off with a bit of noise every now and then.

I had mine for a year and a half now and no problems at all. The fan is quiet even on high performance mode. I luv this laptop so much I upgraded it to 8gb RAM recently. Will upgrade to a 500gb HDD and install Win7 when it comes out and use the old HDD for backup.

Underclocking the CPU will make the fan turn on less frequently equaling less noise. I for one am very happy with my M1530 and it plays games well and you should be able to get it for a good price. The GPU is covered for an additional year after the warranty expires so I'm not too worried about that.

I'd also advice you not to buy one. I have one, and I love it, but the machine is not even 6 months old and I'm on my second motherboard because the GPU crapped out on me.

With that being said, it's very quiet. Even when the fan kicks in while under light load, it isn't all that loud. Mine comes on when the GPU hits 65*C, turns off at 55*C. Just web browsing and whatever, I'd say it's probably on for 45 seconds every 10 minutes. Not a big deal. I leave this thing on 24/7 on my desk which is about 2m away from my desk, I don't even hear it. :)

I had a similar problem and it had a very primitive fix. I had a game I installed when I 1st got mine, played it, temps ran cool, game ran fast. And about 8 months later I went back to it and the performance was slow, temps hot, lots of changes and it made a lot more noise. and I ended up cleaning the fan off, undoing the bottom panel and pulling what turned out to be hair and dust from the fan. It ran much much better and quieter after that.
