Dump the RAM, HD, and the PC-cillin (if it's not included with the notebook/doesn't cost more aftermarket) and upgrade them yourself. RAM costs about half aftermarket when compared with what Dell gives you.

the pc-cillin came with it at no cost, the HD if i get the 60gb is about a $215 diff and the ram is a $225.

any suggestions on a good manufacturer for the ram.....i have heard about newegg so i'll probably look there

How long do you guys think before Dell may give the XPS M1710 a coupon to defray the hefty price? Even a 10% coupon would be enough for me to pull the trigger and buy 1 :D

Yes - you will have to upload Windows and the MediaDirect, however.

One question though is how many DIMM slots does the m1710 have? If I buy the laptop from dell with 1mb it appears to come with 2 DIMMs. So is there room for me to buy another 2 dimms totaling 1mb or will I be forced to throw away the existing memory and buy 2 dimms totalling 2 mb? If there are only 2 DIMM slots it is probably cheaper to get the extra ram from dell.

you could add an aftermarket internal and you could run an external
