You're supposed to get a laptop that's equivalent or better than the original machine. Given that both are better with respect to spec, you aren't supposed to get one over the other.

Some have had good luck bargaining for an m17x or m18x though. I dunno how hard you have to push for that, though.

M1710 should be an Alienware replacement as XPS aren't gaming oriented anymore. At least what I've seen with M1710, it should be to M1730, M17xR1, M17xR2...and M18x.

What can I do to convince them to give me the m18x or m17x laptop instead keeping the xps 17?

Call up Customer Service and demand a gaming laptop, which the M1710 was marketed as and say the XPS 17 doesn't have a gaming card in it. Trust me you don't want an XPS 17.

It's a midrange card, but it is by far no gaming card. The cards in an Alienware would utterly blow away the cards in the XPS.

I called dell and ask for the manager and I said the m1710 was advertised for gaming and I need it to replace with another laptop that was advertised for gaming which is m18x. She says that the xps 17 l702x is advertised for gaming and she wont let me get alienware m18x. So I escalated the call and now I have to wait 24-48 hrs for them to call me back. What other likeness does the m1710 have with m18x and not with xps 17?

you may just receive a computer sometime soon without a call most likely the alienware. we did that all the time when i worked for dell. but the policy is replace it with same or greater value of original price in same line. they are suppose to offer you the closest one but when you call their bluff they up you.

or any manufacturers such as Asus, Sager, MSI.. your pick..

EDIT : Oh sorry, you got the xps 17 already, i didn't noticed that..

I wouldn't open it, and refuse to accept XPS 17. That is an unacceptable replacement, it is not a gaming laptop. XPS line is now multimedia oriented, ask for an M17x or M18x.

I had to open the box because I didnt know what laptop it was until I saw the bottom of the laptop and it said xps l702x(this took about 45 secs to find) then I put it back in the box resealed with duct tape. I never turn it on.

Still waiting for the escalating team to call me.

Maybe I am alone on this, but it sure seems to me that the L702x has much better specs then the m1710. Seems Dell has held up it's end of the bargain.

m1710 was marketed as a gaming laptop.
    m1710 has customizable flashing lights.
m1710 screen resolution is bigger 1200.
Xps 17 has none of these and a smaller resolution 1080. Alienware m17xr2/m18x has all of these.
Searching this forum and others I see people with m1710 get alienware m17x r2 and m18x for a replacement. This is the wrong replacement.

The escalation team is requesting an alienware m18x. I hope they approve of this. I hope they give me 580m sli and 2960xm cpu with 3 years warranty.

That would be a suitable replacement. Whatever balance is left over from your M1710 warranty should be transferred.

Dam the ecalations team lied to me. They gave me m17x r2 with i5 m520 2.4ghz cpu and crossfire 5870. But my m1710 had geforce go 7950gtx, why did they give me a radeon card?

5870 Mobility was the best cards for M17xR2, beats 285M SLI in certain benchmarks. Interesting they gave you an R2...it's been EOL for quite sometime. R2 honestly is better than XPS 17, sometimes if you reject their 2nd option, you'll go back to an inferior option..

The 5870 Mobility? What drivers are you on? I'm on 12.2 preview Catalyst drivers, been doing great, no artifacts.

I am using the official mobile amd 12.2 drivers. When I turn on stealth mode it goes away but when I use crossfire I get this problem.

Stealth mode puts your laptop to lowest settings. Try purging your driver using CCleaner and try reinstalling them. I am using Dell's old CCC but using the updated Catalyst INF files. The way you can do this is by extracting the ATI drivers BUT don't install them. Go to device manager and right click on the video cards and target the extracted INF files and it will only update the drivers but leave Dell's CCC there. That's the only way I've been able to get non BSOD CCC on my R2.

They are replacing my i5 520 cpu with i6 620 cpu. Is this a big improvment for gaming? Also, can you overclock this cpu?

I mean both are dual cores, so not really. Also try looking at the Throttlestop Guide in Hardware for overclocking.

My m1710 had a overclocking cpu but the 620m doesnt overclock. There suppose to give i7 740qm, 840qm, 920xm, or 940xm.

Are you sure it isn't enabled in Catalyst Control Center? Open up CCC, go to Performance and AMD CrossfireX and enable Crossfire?

back in the days my m1710 with sli got replaced by m17xr2.
but since the r3/r4 is incapable of sli/crossfire might suggest the will replace it with M18x.
unless the will repair the m1710 now :)

I can't do that my warranty is expired. They only extended the warranty for dell depot. To replace the scratched screen I have to send it back to dell again. If I send it back I hope they don't screw up my laptop more.
