So i checked the power options and went to "change when the computer sleeps." "what closing the lid does" and the computer still turns off after 2-3 hours of being closed. I leave the laptop downloading stuff and when i open it the computer is off (not sleeping, OFF). any idea what might be the problem.

I wouldn't suggest putting it to sleep anyways.
If you are not using it, just shut it off. I've seen GPU's getting fried from it. -
I think you misunderstood me, i don't want the computer to sleep, i want it ON because i'm downloading stuff, and every time i open the lid the computer is off. i already checked every power setting to never put the laptop to sleep, nor hibernate.

Hmn, I didn't have problem leaving my M1730 on when I owned one. It was pretty much on 24/7.
Is it running on battery?
I pretty much had both settings at performance when I had it, and made sure it didn't goto sleep, or hibernate. Only thing I had on was screen saver after 15 minutes or so.
Do you have quickset installed?
Oh and my lid was always open btw.
Try to put these question on M1730 owners lounge. Loads of experts there. -
yes i have quickset and is running on ac adapter

I'm having the exact issue, except the top is left open. Blaster, did you ever find a resolution? Or anyone else?
Thanks. -
My 1530 was doing this for the last month before gave up the ghost.
I would leave it downloading overnight , come back in the morning and it would be off.
Screen open and on power adapter.
I started watching it a little closer and it was an over heating issue under 3d load tests with GPU 100% and CPUs 100% my nvidia temp sensor was hitting over 100 degrees..
Checked all the Exhaust paths , and fan and they where clear.

I would suggest loading a temp program like Coretemp or the Nvidia Temp Windows Gadget to monitor your temps .
Also invest in a good laptop cooling pad.
