Is this normal that when the machine has no cable attached is very silent - the fan runs occasionally for a short period o time unlike when the laptop is plugged in, makes much more noise - the fan only stops for about 3-4 min and starts cooling again for another 5-6min or sometimes longer depends on work..?

    Cheers

What's your operating System and power plan?

If you installed Vista by yourself, you might miss the Dell power plan:

In the advanced settings of the Vista power plan you can set the min and max processor throttle. Maybe your DC settings are reduced and thus dissipate less heat.

Does the GeForce 8600M toggle its clock depending on DC and AC operation? I think this can be checked with RivaTuner. I'm on X3100 and thus can't tell.

I think it is not power plan issue..I am using recommended by dell settings in Vista and they are both the same for battery and plugged in modes..

The fan just keeps running and running..???

With the current BIOS for the 1530 and others, Dell implemented thermal changes for the GPU (due to the NVIDIA G84/86 issue). This probably plays into it. If I recall correctly the fix was to run the fan at a lower RPM from the moment the system was powered on. The fans will always be on. As the temps increase, the fan RPM will increase.
