Old news read the Dell forum
-
i reckon every when the notebook goes bad and the reason of the failing is root back to the defective nvidia chip, the customer should receive a free replacement notebook.
-
Yeah maybe. However people in this forum are actually affected by this news. And this here is the forum that contains the 91 page M1330 display issue thread:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=204772
I checked the first pages of this forum and it didn't contain the news. I won't read the dell forum.
Maybe this is the thread he means:

or this one:

Wow rough crowd 7oby. Dell just announced this yesterday and it was first posted here in a different area about 7 hours before you did and it is "old" news already. I hadn't seen it yet if it makes you feel any better since I just go to the XPS section.
Seems like a lame offer though. I already have a 3 year warranty so I should be good but what people that only have a one year and their GPU goes bad in 27 months. Sorry sir we know you only had your laptop for just over two years and your known defective onboard GPU is broken but we are not going to cover it so you get to pay for a whole new motherboard.
-
THIS IS NOT A GOOD SOLUTION FOLKS! YOU SHOULD BE OUTRAGED!
1 year is just a way for Dell to try and keep this under control. I bet most GPU issues will start to appear 2-3 years out when this weak material starts to really degrade. The 1330 crowd are probably in a better place right now as theirs seem to be affected sooner, the 1530 folks will see this much later most likely outside of warranty. Dell should be taking care of us for the life of the machine period and passing cost on to Nvidia, their problem. 1 year! Screw you Dell. -
I don't feel screwed over. I think it's pretty adequate.........
-
-
dam, so i should buy an longer epp for my 1530 huh.
-
You should actually be surprised they gave anything at all. -

Just out of curiosity, what is apple doing for the Macbook pro owners?
-

nothing... no word from apple or hp. (think hp had a quiet solution for one specific model, but nothing like dell's)

Your situation is completely different as LARGELY KNOWN manufacturers don't put certain performance circuit boards in washers. It's not like every single circuit board was bad from the circuit board manufacturer. Yours just either died of age, was one of the one-in-a-thousand ones that died after or a while, or you put too much stress on it.
Dell sells a complete unit put together with 3rd party, widely known parts that you pick from. Is it Dell's fault that the chips went bad when the other, well-known (nVidia) manufacturer of the chips said that everything was fine when Dell chose to use those chips? Did Dell know when they chose to put the G84/G86 core GPU's in their systems? Blaming Dell is like blaming yourself for choosing to get the G84/G86 GPU instead of the Intel one that works fine. -
I'm pretty sure HP and Dell are the first to even admit the problem nevermind providing solutions to it. I don't know about everyone else, but in Canada, if something goes wrong and I send it in, at least it'll take less time for them to send it back than if it was a new shipment.
By the way, I think MBP owners are more at risk since they seem to go a lot hotter so then the owner would instinctively turn it off. Then turn it back on after a cool down damaging the material. Maybe they'll think it was a virus -
HP is actually fixing a very large amount of lines of their laptops, even many older ones with nvidia GPUs in them. They are taking it even further than Dell and providing repairs and reimbursements for all those laptops.

Exactly, the first person I would call if something went wrong would be a Dell rep and not nVidia. Because it's Dell who will be sending you a replacement not nVidia. Of course I don't blame Dell for the damage, but I do expect compensation from them as I trusted their product and they would work to keep that trust, with the 12 month extended warranty for example.
-
As you have pointed out, it's not a question of blame, it's a question of responsibility. And Dell is responsible for the products they sell to their customers. -
-
-
Sorry for this newbie post, as i just had this issue happen to me and got my motherboard replaced just to read about this the day after. My question is (sorry if it was answered somewhere else), is the 1 year warranty automatically added or do i have to ask for it myself?
-
I think it's a fair solution. For 8600 owners who do not game, the GPU on average will not bust up. I think Dell was premature in coming out with the 1 year extended warranty because the problem has not been completely identified but then again I have not found a way to get in on this extended warranty yet so they may have put it out there pending new information from Nvidia.
-
-
So am I wrong in thinking that as of right now, I have the 4 year extended warranty + accidental (thanks paper_wastage!) plus 12 months for the GPU. Therefore all parts are covered for 48 months and the GPU will be covered for 60 months?
-
No that is the way I read it.
-
Wow it's been awhile since I came here, but I knew my notebook was had/having a heat issue. I was going to put some AS5 and upgrade my CPU along the way, but I'll wait to see what happens my GPU situation. I don't know if this issue is sticky but this information deserve to be one.

Okay, since people are trying to gang up on me because I said my opinion.
Somekevinguy (or whatever your name is): Your "are you new" statement implied, in my eyes, the forum.
Others: I was simply stating my opinion. I've built computers for many years and if something went wrong I'd go to the manufacturer of the part. I do see where you could be coming from where we would go to Dell: I'm not saying that I WOULDN'T. I would too. It's the fact that nVidia is simply announcing that they screwed everything up, and isn't even giving any compensation or doing anything (from what I've read), but Dell is stepping up and atleast doing -something- right now.
Lay off, it's an opinion. -
Nobody is saying you are not free to post or express your opinion, its just that your opinion is wrong!
All kidding aside, I think there is a lot of frustration with this issue and frankly I don't think anyone should be cutting Nvidia or Dell a break. They need to reassure us, their loyal customers that they will keep us updated and that our machines will last longer than 2 years.
-
Cheers.

Here is an nVidia press release from over a month and a half ago that has been posted here before so you can catch up.

Thanks Fonduekid for the advice, I need a break. You see Dell as doing everything they can, step by step, making sure they have your best interest in mind, I'm glad. They are not reassuring me of anything, they are testing the waters with the one year warranty, to see if people like you just roll over and accept it. I just won't fall for their test. I want more.
I don't care if they read this or not, but I am glad that there is so much attention from members like you and others as it keeps the issue alive. Better chance for a reasonable outcome. I hope Dell steps it up, it would be good for all of us.
