Hi all
Should hopefully receive my m1530 anytime now. Looking forward to it as my old desktop is pretty much fubar.
I'm going to put VMWare server on it and run an Ubuntu VM. Mainly for Dynamips (java-based Cisco VM - it runs much better under Linux).
I haven't played around with VMWare server before so was wondering how many of you have this kind of setup? Anything major I need to know?
My plan:
1. download/install vmware/vmtools
2. download Ubuntu 8.10 iso for guest vm
3. download/install dynamips for linux
4. break open a beer![]()
Is there really that much bloat that I'm going to need to reinstall Vista when I first get the laptop? I don't mind doing it if I have to. Was just wondering if it was worthwhile.
cheers

Sorry... do you mean VMWare server or desktop? At first I thought you did in fact mean server, but then you mention Vista... so I think you're going to run Vista as the host OS then install ubuntu and dynamips as guests? If that's the case, you're talking about VMWare desktop. VMWare server is actually a standalone minimalist unix based OS that serves as the host, then guests are installed within. The reason for this is servers require a clean implementation of the guest and don't really require anything from the host.... but I digress.
I used to run something very similar, M1330 with Windows XP host, Vista Basic, Ubuntu 8.04, Backtrack Linux, Windows 98SE, Windows 2000 as guests (all for support...) -
Hi Hep
Yes, I did mean VMWare Server - mainly because its free. I've read a fair few blogs from people who have done exactly what I intend to do - using Server not Desktop (here's an example of one - blog.cokee.org/?p=550)
cheers
