I plugged my headphones in to the x-fi card and it worked fine, but there is no sound coming out of the speakers when I try playing music or even when vista is booting up. help pls!

I had a similar problem, no one responded to me but here's what I figured out:

-The onboard speakers are, for all intents and purposes, wired to the onboard audio.
-You can choose to output to the speakers via the X-Fi, but you can't control them.
-You can only control the speakers through your original audio control panel (for me, this was Realtek HD Audio). Increase the volume there and see what happens.

    Hope this helps!!

just figured it out by messing around a little bit.
    for future similar problems
    1. double click on your x-fi icon in the system tray
    2. click the main display arrow
    3. click on the final icon (on the right) which says Playback through Notebook Speakers.

phew, that is a big relief.
