so i just got my xps m1530 today and i am not impressed with performance at all. i have the 2.0 with 4gb memory, 8600 graphics card, and vista ultimate. everything is slow, i bought the bluetooth travel mouse and it never wants to work correctly, whenever i am on the internet the scroll wheel wont work, but it works fine when i am in windows?! wtf?the hard drive is pretty loud and constantly going - i hope i didnt make a bad choice here.

DO a complete reinstall of Vista. It's easy and it should make your computer run faster.

yeah but if you do a complete reinstall of vista using the CDs wont the factory default settings image thats stored in the computer be erased as well? Dell tech guy told me that the image partition software will be wiped out and there is no CD to reinstall an imaging software that this laptop came with, unless you use a software like norton ghost and buy it on your own. is this the case?

Thats sorta the point. A clean install is always the best way to go with a Dell computer. Too much bloatware...

I have the same specs that you have execpt I have the 2.2 cpu and "upgraded" to XP on the first day. My hard drive is actually pretty quiet or I'm just deaf. Couldn't tell you about you mouse issue though. Peasonally I've never understood the need for a wireless mouse. I like my cord.

It is the best way to go with ANY computer, has nothing to do with Dell. Dell is better than most in this area.

Yeah format and Vista IS VERY loud (hdd swapping wise).

    Check 3 things:

    1. Remove Indexing, it will help a lot
    2. Check PerfMon: you'll see every process going, you can then remove whatever is needed
    3. Turn Off Automatic Updates

Mine is much much quieter now

    folks,

the dell vista reinstallation disk that comes with your laptop is almost a "clean" copy of vista. It doesn't have all the crap software that comes pre-installed. It includes the dell oem bulk vista key and it is automativcally installed/activated. You don't have to use the key off the bottom of your laptop. You may have to use your driver disk to complete the installation of some drivers. I just did this is the last week and it's a nice, easy process.

I would recommend checking out the "Dell information booth" post that is stickied. There is A LOT of useful information like a clean Vista install and helpful programs that you can use. A direct link can be found here. Scroll to his sig and you'll find his Tips and Tweaks for Vista that will help you not only remove indexing but also optimize your system. I myself just got a 1530 and LOVE it. I don't have any of the issues that I'm reading about but I followed these recommendations. Let us all know of any other issues.

The Vista disc that came with it is a full install OEM one. The other discs are provided to install the rest of the programs/drivers. You'll probably will lose the warranty info that was installed with the laptop.

Reinstallation of OS does NOT void your warrenty.. You dont need to believe me.. just call the customer care and ask them.. And kanethi. there is no warrenty related information stored in the laptop itself.. its been stored in their server with a your customer id as "unique key"..(Anybody here having a basic knowledge of networked database would understand what I am want to tell)

    That is very True.

What I would recommend is logging into your dell account and making the xps laptop your default system, if it isn't already. They use your SERVICE TAG to track your warranty and all that stuff. Once you ensure it's in the system, you have nothing to worry about.......
