I entered today to the site, and I saw the A10 update for the L502X
I got a file not found error while trying to download from the original drivers download site.
but getting to dell's ftp site, I was able to download.
A10 bios can be found here:
http://ftp.dell.com/FOLDER00318273M/1/L502XA10.exe
according to the official site those are the checksums:
about the changes, they are following.
as you can see, it may contain the fan fix.
does it fixes the fan issues for you?
I was also thinking to relase a modded version (GPU voltages) in the topic of my signature if this version changes are worth of it![]()

Is this universal bios for all of the L502X XPS laptops or is there a different version for different specced laptops ?
-
as far I know it is for all L502X
-
Thank you .
-
Wow, this is the first bios that has ever mentioned anything about the fan. Installing now, although I don't hold much hope lol.
-
OK there seems to be some legs in this! I will need to do some more testing, but the fan seems improved!
I loaded iTunes while plugged in with the laptop fully warmed up and the fan did not come on, never done this before. Secondly both Engadget and T3 sites would cause the fan to go crazy as soon as they loaded, neither sites triggered it thus far. I also loaded Outlook, which also would trigger the fan when loading, again the fan stayed quiet. Finally I ran a youtube HD video, and again the fan was quiet.
I am still suspicious as I really need to test a couple of days but it does seems rather promising!
-
I still have the original BIOS that came with my XPS15, A07. I play lossless files through iTunes all day, with other applications running. Most of the time my fan is so low that it's barely audible.
I've never had the fan issues that other users complain about. When I tax my processor, such as doing multiple audio conversions concurrently or video conversion, all with several other apps running which is normal for me, then fan will ramp up audibly, but return to low or off once processor settles down. -
It is not all about running, it is about the loading. If you browse the web a lot, or check your emails etc then having the fan go crazy even for a few seconds while it loads is bloody annoying.
Anyway, why are you posting this? The fan issues are well documented and accepted. Your reply is irrelevant. -
I'm well aware of that. Some users posted that the fan ramped up even while just web browsing. I'm saying that even with lots of activity, and while decoding lossless audio, my fan is rarely above low. That's using BIOS A07.
So, if others had the fan problem while on that BIOS, then perhaps there is another source of the problem.
I didn't dismiss anyone's complaints, as can be seen in my post, so your flame is unwarranted and d1ckish. -
Incredibly satisfied with the new a17 bios on my xps L702x. Palmrest is now freezing cold and fan is pushing air inaudible while heavily browsing the internet!
Fan outtake is also freezing cold! much improvement! -
Using the same method as the OP hear is the newly released bios for the xps 17.

Yes, that's where I got mine from. I was hoping everyone to realize it themselves
-
Flashed it and been running for about 20 minutes now. The fan is still on but it isn't as loud as before. With A09, I can have my laptop on my desk with nothing running and the lid closed, I could hear the fan kick on and spin really loud. I only use it to listen to music, school, movies, web browsing, audio/video editing, photo editing and vmware. I may install some games on it later though. Also, is it possible to flash back to a previous version? Maybe I need to mess with the NVidia settings to remedy the issue with the fan slowly running? I am not familiar with how to set anything up in the NVidia CP. Currently, in PhysX Processor it is on Auto, Manage 3D settings is set to Auto for Global. Also, I noticed right when I open NVida CP, the fan stops running.
-
A17 is just like A12. A16 made the fans speed up less now it is back to spin up but it does stay spin up when browsing the web.
-
Kinda of hard to understand what you said.
-
Sorry what I meant to say is that when the fans speed up they stay on I guess A16 did the same thing but with A12 they spinned up and down.
-
Oh ok. My fans seem to come on every 4-5 mins for about 30-40 seconds and then shuts off. It's kinda of annoying but if the new BIO is better then I'd deff try it.
-
You post is relevant, not every machine has the crazy fans issue , i have been using the A07 bios and have experienced no problems , same as you , there might be more to this problem than just the bios .
I am on the A10 now and i cannot see any difference - everything runs exactly the same = cool and quiet
-
My system would almost come to a halt then the fan would spin up and everything would be fine. Been running A17 for days now and not run into that issue once. Nothing else has changed on my system except the BIOS. It was the BIOS as far as I' concerned.
-
That's on a completely different system that what is discussed in this thread. Yours must be an XPS17, whereas the topic of this thread is BIOS A10 for XPS15.
-
Watch this video and tell me if you get corruption around 34 seconds, Path of Exile I never seemed to notice this happening until this new bios. I tried both the stock dell bios and the undervolted. Maybe I'm crazy but I never seemed to have that problem with videos until this bios.
-
@buch3r
running now the new A10 undervolted 0.83v/0.83v mod for the 525m, and watched the whole video without a ingle issue. -
Hmm, I'm using chrome. However, when I right clicked on the video and went into the settings for flash I disabled hardware acceleration, and then restarted chrome and watched the video again without issues. Hmm..
-
well, I was using firefox, it can be some chrome related issue.
but yeah, downloading the video is usually better than flash, I dont like flash, it usually take lot of resources. -
Strangely enough, when using IE I had the same issues. However, when launching chrome using the nvidia gpu, the issues were not there, so it may be an issue with the intel graphics and hardware acceleration with flash. What version of drivers are you using for intel? I got latest drivers from windows update running, although I tested with the latest from intel's website, which are older than the windows update ones, and the problem still exists.
-
@buch3r
I also updated latest intel drivers via the windows update.
I have firefox.exe with intel card, however, I have "plugin-container.exe"
wich is part of firefox with the nvidia GPU card.
I noticed some improvement at the flash videos and heavy flash websites after setting "plugin-container.exe" to use nvidia card. -
I just watched the video and i get the corruption 34 seconds in as you mentioned.
-
I have the same corruption on the video at 34 and 38 seconds. I have not updated my BIOS to A10 yet. Still running A09.
-
did you install the latest Intel HD 3000 drivers? 2653 and 2656 had a few problems (eg. 'COM Surrogate error when viewing photos and videos') and were pulled from the Intel download center. Try re-installing driver version 2622. That should solve your problems.
It's definitely not the BIOS as I just recently did a clean install on my L502x and it's running beautifully. The fan can't even be heard and the temps also improved! I used to get around 60-65 Celcius on normal usage (browsing, music etc.) but now it's only around 50+ Celcius. In fact, it barely makes any noise when I play Modern Warfare 3 on Ultra.
Good fix, this A10 BIOS.
-
This bios update made my computer freeze after a few minutes of gaming, using the NVIDA 540GT on my L502x.
I went back to A9 and the issues disappeared again (but fan more noisy).
Anyone have the same issues? -
I was using the latest at the time. Anyways I tried watching the video again in Chrome on Windows 8 Release Preview, the video no longer has that corruption. Definitely a driver issue.
official A10 BIOS released on 15/03/2012
