I was considering buying a Ultimate build of the Dell Studio XPS Laptop when I came across the "optional 16" RGBLED seamless display". I tried to build an Ultimate with the "optional 16" RGBLED seamless display" but it doesn't seem to be an option you can pick. After trying Dell Chat, twice, and 1 phone call to a sales rep, it seems to no longer be an option for the XPS unless you get a plain Studio 17 Laptop. Forgive me if this is answered elsewhere, tried finding it, but anyone know if it's coming back as a pick able option you can only pick the WLED?

It is still available in the UK (if you have a friend who could order it and send it to you from here - if you're really desperate! :p), but no 5730 as of yet.
If you're in the US then it is definitely NOT coming back. Completely withdrawn from the S-XPS line due to power consumption issues. Sorry!

Good luck on your quest for ultimateness! :D

Thanks. I just think it's silly that they have this "Brighten your view with the 15.6" LED or optional 16" RGBLED seamless display" on the details section of the Canadian website for the XPS Laptop. It's not hard to edit a page to remove a line of text.

Typical Dell, offering stuff that they won't actually let you have. They had 4 months to fix their error, but did not.

Agreed. It can't be too much to ask for them to edit the picture gallery too so that it shows the 9-cell battery which is the only one offered! It's a bit like false advertising if you ask me! And I'd be pretty gutted if I got the 9-cell without knowing it was a big bulge at the back!

Is it best to wait or just go with the Edge-to-Edge FHD Widescreen 15.6 inch WLED LCD (1920x1080) W/2.0 MP screen? I'm not in a huge hurry but I would like a new Laptop; however, waiting may see an even better XPS come out in the months ahead.

Not much point in waiting. They won't bring back the RGBLED and a new model won't be due until the new Intel chipset is available. January at the absolute earliest, but I can't imagine that happening!

How big a difference is the RGBLED vs the WLED? I don't want to buy the Laptop and always think there is a much better screen out there.

Side by Side the difference in my eyes is huge. The RGB is alot brighter, colors really pop, the screen is just beautiful. It is also bigger 16 vs 15.6. The difference is there is a bigger border around the screen. Instead of the screen reaching to the aluminum accent you have a little 1 - 0.5 inch black border.

The WLED in my eyes is a sub standard display. The Macbook pro 15 inch literally blows it out of the water. I know apple usually has really good displays but it doesn't change the fact the Compared to the RGB and Macbook the WLED is trash IMO. Other will argue with me about this but as i said this is just my opinion.

I was afraid that would be the case. Mac's are to much out of my price range. I believe you had said, in another thread, that Sony makes good Laptop screens? How do you tell what is the best one?

My WLED looks better than my father's Macbook Pro display... The thing is that Macbooks come with their screens precalibrated (as far as I know my father didn't do anything to his, and it still looks nice...) and they look great out of the box. What you get when you open up a DELL box is 10500k trash. And it's a pain in the to get it calibrated properly.

But the results are more than satisfactory, I assure you.

Don't beat yourself up over it. The RGBLED just isn't available anymore, so the WLED is the best screen out there for this system!

I don't know why the RGB is hyped so much here. The wled isn't exactly great either. For wled, Dell uses either LG /w 60% CG(colors look a little washed out) or AUO /w 72% CG(horrible everything else, nothing like its 17.3'' brother). After experimenting all 3 displays, I have decided to use the LG wled. The RGB strained my eyes so much.

The RGB strained my eyes too at first. But 3 months on and I can't imagine going back! It's been the best screen on the market for the past 2 years and that's why it's hyped on here!

I hope that Dell pushes the boat out again and gets another incredible screen lined up for its next model. Maybe not an OLED just yet but a higher refresh rate would be nice. 60hz isn't the best for watching a blu ray, but 200hz is! I don't know if that's possible on such a small screen though?

It's far from the best screen, imo. May be I am spoiled with ips/spva monitors. While I do think the RGB is a fun display to have, however, it's not something I would consider using as my main display.

The Vaio z, Fw and F all have great displays

It is the best LAPTOP screen available. I know and have seen far better monitors but for laptops the RGBled screen is the best you can get. Ive seen a couple of dell IPS 30 inch monitors and i fell in love but there price range is insane

What is the difference, if any, between a XPS with Obsidian Black High Gloss Finish with a screen of Edge-to-Edge FHD Widescreen 15.6 inch WLED LCD (1920x1080) W/2.0 MP and a XPS with Merlot Red High Gloss Finish with Leather and a screen of 15.6 FHD WLED Display in Merlot Red with leather and 2.0 MP Webcam? Or more to the point is a 15.6 FHD WLED Display in Merlot Red with leather and 2.0 MP Webcam a "Edge-to-Edge FHD Widescreen 15.6 inch WLED LCD (1920x1080)"?

The difference is that one is black and one is red! :D

Ha ha, I'm pretty sure the screens are the same.

It is certainly not the best laptop screen. There are IPS laptop screens available and better TN screens than this with or without rgb led. The HP IPS DC screen is probably the best.

I've owned every Dell 30'' - 3007wfp /w a4, 3007wfp-hc /w q3, and 3008wfp /w q5 before moving on to the Eizo sx3031w(pva) because I got tired of the IPS AG coating effect and crappy black level w/o the A-TW polarizer. You can find one for pretty cheap these days. I bought my 3008wfp for about $800 shipped a few months back.

So I got a quote (remember this is in Canadian Dollars) for Studio XPS Laptop Ultimate system with Merlot Red High Gloss Finish with Leather (which I believe includes Edge-to-Edge FHD Widescreen 15.6 inch WLED LCD (1920x1080) W/2.0 MP) for just a tiny bit over $1500 including GST. I was thinking of buying this system, but the case is ugly and it's about $300 more. Don't know if I should get it or wait for a better deal from Dell in around Christmas time which is 3+ months away.

They're all "edge-to-edge", which is misleading, as there is a large bezel around it. They just use that term to describe the plastic sheet that covers the monitor.

What is the minimum warranty you should get with a 1647 if your trying to save money? For example, I can get 12% of purchase price if I get the 3 year warranty, other wise I only get 7% off with 2 or less year warranties.

Warranties are always a good investment. Go ahead and get the 3 year, most serious hardware problems tend to occur after the 2-year point.

And not only that.....the plexiglass is covering the LCD which is a commonplace TN format screen =/ hence the viewing angle behavior that xps16 users experience (with the WLEDs at least to my knowledge.)
