my XPS 16 has the samsung PM800 128gb SSD. when trying to install large programs or games my laptop will keep locking up. i timed one lock up and it lasted about 3 mins.

i am currently installing Dragon Age and it's estimated to take about an hour and half. is this a common problem and is there something i can do to fix it?

to be honest with all these problems with the XPS 16 i wish i hadnt bought it .. too late for me to send it back now though

Did you try to run the Dell diagnostic program to see if there is something wrong with it ? Maybe it's something else ? Could be the DVD/Blue-Ray problem.

I don't know why you keep spreading this link around. Samsung released the firmware supporting TRIM months ago and every SSD shipped with dell systems come with it pre installed.

For the Ppl like Me who have the Samsung drives that don't support trim(VBM19D1Q) which shipped on alot of the 1640's (I have had my laptop since October of last year)the SXPS 16 is not a new system you forgot that the 1645/47 are new not the 1640 and they are shipping them out now not before

so just to clarify that frimware is for only
    •Old version : VBM18C1Q or VBM1801Q (Before Update)
    •New version : VBM19C1Q or VBM1901Q (After Update)

    From Samsung firmware PDF

    Located: http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/products/flash/ssd/2008/down/FirmwareDownloadGuide.pdf

If you have this version VBM19D1Q I wouldn't try it could be harmful to your drive

Also here is a link to the Alienware thread talking about the new Firmware http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=444979&highlight=m15x

We have to wait for Dell to package us a firmware update till then Tony-TRIM is an optional solution.

EDIT: added crystaldiskinfo screenshot showing trim not being supported on this version

I'm having the EXACT same problem. Not only does it lock up, but when it does, my whole computer slows down considerably.

What Windows Experience Index do you get for the SSD? I get 5.9 which seems unusually low. That is with Intel Matrix Storage manager.

If anyone can offer any help it would be much much appreciated!

Enable write caching on the device is checked.
Turn off Windows write-cache buffer flushing on the device is unchecked.

Maybe its because your SSD is newer firmware than mine

how much slower is the samsung ssd than that awesome intel x25-m ssd? Is it it obvious in everyday operation or only benchmarks?
