hi everyone,
I buy a dell studio xps 4 month ago. I had few problem with it.
My laptop is realy hot sometime. I was just on firefox ( with alot of page open) and the heat go like 60, 65 degree celsius ( it is 140, 149 in Fahrenheit i think). I don't know if it is normal or if my laptop have a problem.
I call dell and they change the cpu fan but it don't seem to have change anything. The laptop is still very hot.
I have another problem. When i play on game my computer go very slow and when i chek in task manager the cpu run a 100%. It happen in some of the game that i play. I don't understand why because a chek the minimum configuration of the game and my computer is over that so i am supose to be able to play the game with no problem. The last game that this situation happen was prince of persia ( the last one).
And when i play on game the heat go at 70, 75 degree celsius ( it is 158,167 Fahrenheit )
thank to everyone that will help me to resolve my problem.
my configuration:
dell studio xps 16
windows 7
intel core 2 duo 2,4 GHz
ati radeon 4670 hd
4 gb of ram
PS : sorry for my bad english ( i am a french canadian )
PS2 : all the temperature that i post was chek by speedfans

It is not unusual for the computer to get that hot as I have seen mine get to 170F... the laptop will get hot if you are in high performance... you can either turn the performance down and or undervolt the cpu. As far as the gaming, which games are you playing?
-
Do you have a cooling fan underneath ? It helps alot.
-
i actualy playing prince of persia ( the last one), but that happen on prince of persia 2 and 3. These last one a old so i am not supose to have probleme with these two. The cpu was running at 100% after 20 or 30 minutes of gaming. I think that it might be because of the heat but i am not sure. It happen too in devil may cry 4, but in devil may cry the game play better than prince of persia but the laptop go very hot.
do you have a solution for that ?
for the fan i only have the integrate fan that have on the studio xps 16 -
I guess thats probably due to the heating issue. Try undervolting and using a cooler.
-
I would use RMClock and use the max performance setting to lock the multiplier to max it out
-
Those temperatures seem about normal for that laptop. Your best bet would be to use a laptop cooler and keep checking those temperatures.
Be sure to keep your cooling fan and heatsink clean.
I don't have any advice for the games. -
you can also overclock the GPU if you want. I did and found the performance to be very good. I get 60FPS in WoW on 1080p and Resident evil 5 runs great on 720.
-
So it is not a problem with my dell as i can see ?
the temperature don't realy disturb me. Is most the cpu that run at 100% when i am on game that disturb me.
Some of you have said me some thing that i can try but before trying that i want more information.
What is undervolting, what is the utility for doing that and how to do that ?
What is the utility of rmclock and how to use it. And as i see the program don't seem to run on windows 7. Only on windows xp
PS: what i find strange is that if my configuration is ok to run a game why do i have to do all that thing to make my computer running game that it is suppose to run. I find that strange that my cpu run a 100% in game. My friend have the same computer and don't have this probleme. ( he don't play the same game than me but the game play run well like wow)
thank -
well what settings are you running the game on? You can do a simple search on undervolting here in the forums as there is a guide. there is also a guide to overclocking the GPU in the forums as well. The computer you have can run games well, just not on max settings.
-
the problem is that on prince of persia there is no setting.
But when i play prince of persia 2 ( that is an old game) i was supose to be able to play the game at full setting but i have the same problem of cpu runing at 100%. So i change the setting and it don't change anything there was the same problem that happen.
The only tips i find is to close my antivirus and close i my program like firefox and disconect my pc from internet.
For rmclock does it work on windows 7 ?
thanks -
yes RMClock works on Win7... Prince of persia 2 is an old game and should be able to play on max settings. I run Sims3 on max settings which is a newer game but it does have different graphics demands... Try opening the task manager and then open resource monitor under the performance tab and look to see if you are running under maximum frequency.
-
hum.. when you tell me to chek the maximum frequency it is when i play the game or now. because now my cpu is use at 20% and its says 63% of the maximum frequency. I have pass the game prince of persia 2 but i find that strange what happen with it and some other game that why i want to resolve this probleme
tanks for your help -
well I am asking mainly for when you are playing... That way we can see if it is downclocking itself during gameplay. I use the RMClock to force it too 100% frequency. I would say watch the temps but as long as it is on a flat surface it should be fine. Try reading the thread on undervolting... it also tells u how to lock it in full power.
-
how to make it go on the full frequency with rmclock ( he don't seem to work on win 7 64 byte but i find a driver and i think that it work now)
do undervolting is safe or not ?
do this two thing will resolve my probleme ?
I have another question. is it the heat that push my processor to run at 100% or it is something else ?
PS: do you have a link to the turorial for the undervolting -
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=235824
There is the link for you, you can read through it. RMClock should work without a problem as I have Win7 64bit as well. Undervolting is safe but I am not too interested in it, I just use the program to force full power. The computer might be underclocking the processor because of the heat which would mean that the processor is not running at full power and why it would take 100% of the CPU to do the work of maybe 50% at full frequency power... Does that make sense? haha... I have no problems gaming so hopefully this will help. -
thanks for your help i will trie what you said and i will let you know if it work.
I am actualy trying to understand all you say that i am a french men and i don't understand very well all the word that you said hahaha
thanks
