You could take the hard drive out of the computer and put into a desktop with an extra sata port and use a disk cloner such as DriveImage XML (cant post links yet just google it)

didnt come with a vista dvd, but i remember with my hp pavlion, i did a security image recovery in 2 dvds, and for example, if i format all my hard drive, and one i would like to use vista, i only need to turn on the computer, press f12 and put the dvds, and thats all, does dell has the same? because i want to do an image if in a future i would like to have the computer as when i recive from the factory, i remember when i did the security copy in my hp i do without any extra program

you should have gotten a Dell disk with Vista on it, if not contact them about getting one. I use Acronis true image to make a backup to an external harddrive, it's only around $25 for the home version and it works great

You don't need to buy it.

Call Dell and ask for your Windows Vista Disk (OEM) .

    They'll send it for free.

hey elverde, long time man !!!

Dell does not work like HP when it comes to vista CDs, in HP you have an application that burns vista into a DVD, but with dell you just ask for it and they send it in for free, talk to dell chat and ask for a vista 32bit DVD, (thats odd, every dell laptop comes with its dell drivers, and vista DVD, you sure it didnt come with yours ? )

oh and your vista license is on the back of your laptop, so you wont loose it :D

    Cheers, and best of luck!

    elverde,

Just a point of clarification, since you're comparing the HP and Dell recovery schemes...

IMHE, the DVD(s) you burn from the HP will restore the OS partition to exactly what it was when you got it--the "as-shipped" state. The Vista DVD provided by Dell does not do that. It is for reinstalling vs. restoring. That may seem like a subtle distinction, but it is important to note, particularly since you may be assuming the end result will be similar to what you are familiar with from your HP experience.

Restoring, as you would be doing if you press F8 and do a factory restore from the Dell Recovery partition, does result in an "as-shipped" OS partition. In contrast, reinstalling from the Dell DVD results in a plain Microsoft Vista OS, without any of the stuff Dell might have added--such as Dell drivers, optional programs (MS-Works, CD/DVD burning programs, etc), and yes, all the Dell crapware. (OTOH, many of us around here prefer that--a clean install without all the junk. But that's beside the point.)

If you want to be able to restore the "as-shipped" OS partition, you can save the \Tools folder and \Dell\Image\Factory.wim file from the Recovery partition. The Factory.wim file is the "as-shipped" image, and the Tools folder contains the imagex.exe application that can restore the .wim file.

However, there are many other issues you need to consider. You'll still need a Vista DVD (or something similar) because you need to be able to boot to a PE environment in order to run the imagex program. Imagex is a command-line utility, so may be too unfriendly for some people. Factory.wim is a single, very large file, so it could be too large to copy to DVD. And even when you do successfully restore the image, you sometimes need to repair the BCD file before it will boot.

And finally, note Factory.wim restores only the OS partition. It does not restore the DellUtility, Recovery, or MediaDirect partitions. If you want to save those, you're better off using a decent third-party imaging tool, such as Acronis True Image or BootIt-NG.

    Same thing here.

I couldn't care less about recovery partitions. I like to install a fresh copy of the OS to get rid of all the bloatware. :)
