I never noticed them before, but it seems I have a thin straight line up the right side of the notebook, where the light is defracted a little, and some other types of scratches. I can't tell if its a manufacturing defect or not, since my lid is normally closed (I use it as a desktop with an external monitor I can take on trips if necessary). It might have happened when I had to open it up to get inside.

The only 'bad' thing I did was very lightly wipe some dust off the screen while I was wearing a wool jacket. I'm not sure this is what caused it, there are a couple arc scratches so I think that is probably the reason. The line scratch is so perfectly perpendicular that I would be surprised it was from this though. I didn't know the gloss on these screens was so fragile.

I can't really send it back since my laptop is heavily modded, and actually the screen panel came from a company in China I want nothing to do with again.

I could probably live with it, but started editing on my pc and use the laptop screen as my monitor (preview screen, not work screen) now. With brightness up enough they aren't really noticeable, just with darks. Normally I am ultra careful with my screens, being used to matte I would scream at someone when I showed them a clip and they actually touched the screen to point to something (man that irked me)

I also had been considering having it re-polarized matte for $150ish, but its not in the budget right now. I wish I could take some photos of the perpendicular line but it just doesn't show up that well on camera.

what I'm thinking of using is Displex

just wonder if anyone had any comments on this. And if its worth trying or best to leave it alone.

Unrelatedly, I wish I sprung for a quad now, thought most my time on this machine would be gaming.

    tl;dr

    is Displex good for scratches

It's not clear... did you replace the screen yourself with the Chinese screen, or it the original Dell glass, but happens to be from the Chinese company (chei mei, I'd guess)?

If it's the original Dell glass and you are under warranty, start a chat and jump through the hoops. They will evenually dispatch a new part to a tech who will come to you and replace it for you.

I should know, I'm on my fourth display since getting a XPS-17 in May.

no, its still an AUO screen, but I tried to go matte and the company I bought from lied to me and its glossy. So it wouldn't be covered under warranty. (well the chinese company had a warranty, but who wants to pay $50 shipping there and back)

Its not a huge deal, was just wondering if anyone buffed out their own scratches on a glossy screen with that stuff I listed above. Probably should have been posted in the aftermarket forum. I might go there in a few days.

I went as cheap as I could on my Dell warranty because I knew I would be changing so much, its still a good machine. Paid $50 for mail in fixes for one year, and didn't pay much upfront for the xps, maybe $700 (not through outlet).

    thanks for the response
