Should I sell my M1330 and try for another notebook?

If so, which ones would be comparable?

    I'm thinking Lenovo SL300 or T400....

I love my XPS, but the 8400m gs debacle has me a bit worried.

I applied the copper mod and drastically reduced my temps, and haven't had a problem in 8 months, but I'm thinking it's just a ticking time bomb.....

The Lenovo IdeaPad U330 might be worth considering.

I have to admit I've considering selling my M1330 and trying something else, but it's mostly just because I want to try something else out for fun.

i know that even your laptop being on warranty and having it suddenly not working is a pain on the....

contacting dell... sorting out the problem, explaining, booking the delivery its free but a real pain

In my case i love my m1330 and i would never change for any other laptop that i didnt try.

so what i would in your case, and actually what im doing right now is contacting dell before the bomb explodes and have it fixed by them without paying a thing. after selling your machine and buying another one is also not a leisure, and after all on the first case you can save some money and keep with your laptop that you already know and moreover you dont need to swap files and anything everything keeps the same as it was.

i dont have copper mod done yet.. ive just ordered the copper plate and the AS5, im plaining to mod my gpu after the replacement oc. so today i sent to dell support explaining my situation and asking for a replacement so lets see how it goes on.

i also decided to do this now because now my lectures just restarted so i dont wanna get a bad surprise later on over my dead lines.

    cya later

How did you phrase your email (?) or chat so that they would replace it before it 'explodes'.

Can you tell us if you were successful?

Yeah, unfortunately they don't sell the IdeaPad U330 in Canada yet. Hopefully they will soon.

yes! i was just thinking today, that i would rest easier if i could get Dell to replace my GPU before it kaputs.

Could anyone give tips on how to phrase this dilemma w/o saying the wrong thing that will lose our chance with them replacing it?

as i said i contacted them just today... i have no answer atm yet, i expect receive something tomorrow though...
what ive told them was the true... that my gpu is overheating even though having all my driver, bios updated. and because of this extreme heat i cant play any game even a 5 years old game as warcraft 3 setted in low res.

I told them that is not normal because i friend of mine and a forum that usually comes( this one) there are other that have the same laptop and do not have this problem. then ive described some temperatures telling my IDLE and when i start having problems (which is 90C), my drivers versions and i also told them that before tracking the temp, i belief that the problem was with my windows vista or the drivers but i did a clean format what grounds this hypotheses

but as soon i have any feedback i will post here

I tried so hard to do this, but no one would budge. So instead, I had my GPU die in the middle of final exams, two days out of warranty (before they had extended it). It was an... interesting experience.

I've considered selling off the M1330 and getting something else, but aside from (possibly) the Vaio Z or HP 2530p I haven't really found anything worth replacing it with. And I can't quite justify $2k+ CAD just cause I feel like something new.

If you have warranty and all your files backed up on an external hdd, I wouldn't worry about it. I'm just glad I got my system without the graphics card so I don't have to worry about this problem... My 95 camaro causes me enough concern

Mate i have been having the high temp problems also and I'm really worried by the extremely high temps.

    My problem:
"I original had the vertical lines problem months ago and got the mobo and fan/heatsink changed. I thought the problem was sorted after the technician changed the parts anyway i started testing the temperatures a few weeks later to see how they were now and to my amazement the GPU was at 90C and the cores were at 80C. Now i wasn't getting the artefacts or vertical lines but with them temperatures i was concerned by them and thought i might get the same problem again in the near future if i didn't contact dell. So i phoned up dell and a technician came out and changed the board again etc.. The problem is when the engineer came out to sort it i was at work my girlfriend was only here so i couldn't do some temperature tests quickly whilst the engineer was here but the problem is I'm getting the same high temps AGAIN. Both the CPU and GPU are ridiculously high, at this time of writing the GPU temp is 88C and the 2 cores are 75C. Now the only programs i have open is firefox and the temp reading prog hardware monitor.

Also i sometimes have an external 24" monitor plugged into this notebook at resolution 1600 by 1200. thought that might be causing the high gpu temps but i unplugged the cable and the temps dropped 2C and that's it.
So what do i do, is it me being paranoid about the temps, i mean i am not getting the vertical line problem any more, well not yet. The temps seem just as bad as before but the engineer has came round 3 times now and changed it, the temps remain the same.

Any ideas peeps, maybe them temps are acceptable and i'm just over worrying about nothing."

I cannot understand why i keep getting high temps the board has been changed twice.

Nice job getting your motherboard replaced!

Now I'm wondering if I should attempt this. I'm in Canada and wonder if I'll get the same treatment....

I have an opportunity to buy an HP DV5-1157CA in Canada for a great price:

    http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/cat_sku.asp?CatIds=&webid=762478&affixedcode=WW

It's a 15.4" which makes it bigger obviously than the m1330.

    Pro's:
    -----
    Centrino 2/Montevino platform
    4 GB vs. 3GB that I have
    9600M GT vs. 8400M GS
possible avoidance of future GPU problems
great clearance price of $997 Canadian

    Con's:
    ------
    bigger form factor
plastic chassis vs. magnesium alloy and aluminum
    lower battery life
    no fingerprint reader
still an Nvidia GPU (can we trust Nvidia anymore)
    2 Ghz P7350 vs. 2.4 Ghz T8300

    What do you guys think?
