anyways I'm thinking about dumping the alienware and get the dell xps m1530(is that good) with the specs of 8600gt 256mb(planing to oc) 6gb ram ohh and everythingelse stock for the same price of the alienware basic model in Canadian(actually it's a bit less like 40$) is this a better deal btw I Know dell and alienware the same...also the os is 64 or 32 bit vista

The XPS M1530 is a great machine, although if you are planning to overclock it you should think about either a seperate notebook cooler or replacing the thermal paste (or both).

You get a choice in operating system when you order the laptop; if you decide to get 6Gb memory then there would be no point in ordering the 32bit operating system as it cannot address the full 6Gb.

I've had no experience with Alienware machines so can't really comment about the differences in performance, especially considering the fact that you haven't provided any specifications.

I'd caution against an M1530 with an 8600M GT... I think most of the issues are fixed, but there are still problems with Nvidia 8x00 cards that can cause them to... kill themselves in a less than timely manner, especially if you OC. Just my two cents, though; I don't own an M1530.

    hey tupac,

i own an m1530, and i can easily tell you it beats my brother's alienware with dual geforce 7950gt in sli, not to mention the xps m1530 is a VERY slim and portable laptop, i recommend it 100%, but i would also recommend you take a look at the studio xps, it has newer technology, faster RAM, and a faster GFX card, but its your choice :D

( btw the geforce 8600gt problem is real, im having trouble with it myself, but a quick call to dell will fix that if you ever have this issue )

I have no problems with my XPS 1530 either, i know the 8600GT thing is real, but frankly covered by warranty so im not worried about it at all.

Now the other issue i do wonder is why people bother OCing their GPUs for 1FPS performance increase. Besides benchmarks, i haven't seen significant increase of performance for GPUs when OCed compared to stock settings, for both desktops and laptops. But thats just me.

Its overkill if you don't run applications that will utilse all of it.

The fact that you're asking whether you should get it, would probably indicate that you don't need it.

I sincerely doubt you'd see much performance increase by getting 6Gb over 4Gb unless you were doing something that required a large amount of memory. I do a lot of photo editing, audio recording and programming on my 1530 and have never had a problem with the 4Gb of memory that I have.
