something is wrong with my sound

For some reason, when I use my earphones, I will hear this annoying clicking sound whenever I double click on everything. I tried using a different earphones and the same thing happens. However, when I play some musics, the clicking sound will not be audible. Even when I play winamp at the lowest possible volume (basically no sound), there is no clicking sound. Anyone have any idea what is up with my sound? The sound is like a popping sound.

 

hey here are a few steps you can do to try an isolate it.

1. restart your computer and see if the clickin sound is happening at any phase during the boot up, or early after the boot. if it doesnt click during these two phases, but later after cpu use, then it could be a problem with the cpu.

2. another thing you can try is reinstalling your soundcard driver. whenever you install programs and stuff there is always a chance ur drivers interfere. to uninstall the sound card driver, go to computer management in control panel (xp), it should be in administrative toools folder,

in comp. management, find device manager... and find sound, vide and game controllers. find the soundcard driver, right click and uninstall, then reinstall (it'l prob happen after a reboot).

note: when you say this clicking sound... do you mean like a noise clicking sound or a distortion type clickin sound? cause if it's the noise thing then u can just disable windows sound schemes.

finally, does the click sound occur only with headphones, or even on the speakers?

I tried restarting and I am receiving constant static during the early boot up. I am not sure how that would help solve the problem. And I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling my sound card driver prior posting this thread. The clicking sound occurs only on headphones, but I have not tested it out on speakers yet. Occasionally I would hear around 5 clicks after clicking on something.

Strange thing is when I open winamp and play some music (even if I mute the music), it stops making that same sound (the sound is quite loud on my earphones even at volume of 3). I even tried opening a game that takes up the whole screen and it will have the same effect as winamp.


EDITED: Disabling the Window Scheme helps with the problem a little bit, but I am still getting the same sound whenever I open something. It's weird how this just started happening after not using my laptop for weeks.

It's not that sound. It's not about the double clicking, its about me opening a file or a folder. The sound that I am talking about can be downloaded in this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=211527. I actually like the window scheme sound =), but this I do not like =(. Not sure if it is static.... But it is weird how it only happens when I am not playing any sound.

 

try and find out if it occurs only when you use the headphone jack, or even with the internal speakers. this way you can see if it's the jack, or the driver itself. i think it might be something wrong with the jack. can you set the other jack on the laptop to accept headphone input and test it on that, what software is your soundcard installed with?

 

It happens in both jack, but for some reason any other sound that is running on the laptop will override that clicking sound. I am not even sure why it is that, but I will try to connect my speakers to my laptop tomorrow and see.

 

alright so both jacks are whacked up, which means it could be a static offset inside the metal hinges of the jacks. ill have to do some digging to see if there is a viable cost-free solution but don't worry we'll get to the bottom of this.

have u tried it with just the laptop's built in speakers? if its what i think it is then the laptop speakers shouldn't make that sound. let's hope im right.

Yea laptop speakers are fine fortunately =D. So if I send my laptop in, will Dell replace it with a totally different laptop or try to fix it? I really like my LG screen =/

 

no i don't think they will replace the laptop they'd have no need, and they certainly won't change anything about it other than the problem.. they might replace the hardware for the soundcard. good thing your laptop speakers work cause we've narrowed it to the metal inlays of the headphone jack. if you send it in, dell has no right to change anything other than what you asked for without consulting you. you can either send in for a replacement or tell them to work on it and fix the staticness, at least now you know where to guide them.

you got an lg screen for your laptop? or monitor? cool i have an lg laptop and the screen is brilliant.

Yea, I got that problem too.its like a pop every time something "breaks the silence". When I got the sound card doing "anything", it doesn't make the noise. So I don't get that pop when I got winamp playing for example (as you stated).

I'm running Windows Xp, and I got the on board audio thing (no soundblaster bleble). I ain't got the "best" fix too give ya, but I did kind of fix it (it was more of a lucky strike).

It seems to be something with the audio drivers, because I did 3 windows installs (the pop was driving me nuts...), and it always came back, so I kind of accepted it and tried to move on. But last week, because of the all so mighty Dellmedia thing button, I lost all my stuff (partition ****'up, and I didn't help with what I did after...), I had to reinstall windows again, and this time, I don't have the pop.

All I can say that "might" have changed, is the order in which I installed the drivers. I used "Udi's" driver pack, and installed in the order which he suggested, and magic, its gone. Maybe, hopefully, it works for others, because I know the pain that noise was when using headphones.

 

I seriously hate doing another reformat, but I'll try doing and I'll let you know if it fixes my problem too. I sure hope this is a software issue. I would hate it if a technician would mess up my laptop after hearing so many bad stories. Btw did this happen right after you first received your laptop or it happened overtime?

 

Happened when I installed Windows Xp. On Vista it was OK (or at least I don't remember noticing it, and I did notice it right away on XP)

The notebook came with Windows Vista, and I guess I installed Xp after 2 or 3 days (just couldn't handle Vista asking me if I was sure about pretty much everything I did on the pc).

Good luck man, it might be the drivers version/installation order.
Dunno what else it could be, it wasn't something I dag too deep in to.

 

Was this with your onboard speakers or your headphones?

Dunno if with the speakers I also got the crack/pop, since they are so crappy its very hard to tell

 

So I tried reformatting and it didn't fix anything =(. Wasted my time too. I then tried to connect my speakers to my laptop, but for some reason, my cursor acted all crazy and flies everywhere. I had to quickly reconnect my speaker for it to stop doing that. I definitely hope that this did not harm any parts in my laptop -.-.

Anyway when I use my speakers, I did not hear that annoying sound, but I can still hear it while on headphones. I am so clueless on figuring out what exactly is wrong with it.
