hey guys, i just recieved my refurb studio xps 13 and it gets really hot on my lap. i am wondering if this heat up issue is isolated to the 9500 graphics card, i have that graphics card and it get really uncomforably hot, to the point i am thinking of returning it, but if it is isolated to the 9500, ill go ahead and grab the other card on my exchange. also i read somewhere that the older build dates have more problems with heat then the newer build dates, is that true? if it is, how do i check my build date? thanks guys

try switching it to power save made, this turns of one of the graphics card and will give you the same expierence as ordering the other configuration.

Balanced or Power saver modes will disable the additional graphics card (which is useless unless gaming anyway) and drastically reduce the thermal output in my experience.

Did all of those steps and it still gets pretty hot on my lap, I have the a06 bios with powersave mode, possible defective laptop? Also my battery sucks, discharge at over 30000mw, with screen brighness on 50% and just browsing the net

Don't consider it a laptop, but a notebook. Isn't really meant to be used on the lap because as you've noticed it gets hot.

You're probably covering up airflow vents when it's sitting on your lap. Try to avoid using it like that anyway. A desk or table is always best.

Haven't updated to A06 yet, but even in power save mode, i hit 70C on the GPU and high 50Cs on the cores - doing web browsing. Using CPUID hardware monitor (free) to check the temps.

Don't consider it a laptop, consider it a stove.

Don't tilt the screen past 90 degrees. It's a design "flaw" that if you do, the scene will block he back vents and therefore the heat will increase.

I was running the same thing on XP.

Went Vista Ultimate 64 last night + A06, now Core temp is @ 40 degrees, GPU @ 50.

The new BIOS cranks up the fan, which gets rid of the waste heat at the expense of battery life and noise.

Yeah A06 helped the heating issues the XPS 13 had(idk if it also did it for the XPS 16 but I'll assume so), but still, it's a design thing that it'd help if the vents could shoot the air sideways rather than upwards since they'd hit the screen.

FYI...i'm running Vista 64 Home edition. I've just now upgraded to A06. I am in powersave mode, plugged in. Just doing web browsing, some Excel, outlook.

Shaved off about 10 degrees or so. Still pretty hot, and a bit higher than some people are reporting, but it definitely helped. Was hoping for below 50 across the board, though.

well, not sure what my temps were before, i already installed the new bios, but I just installed CPUID last night. Had it open the whole time I was on the computer. Was on for 3-4 hours, surfing the web, watched a dvd, and streamed hulu. For the most part it was plugged in and in high preformance mode, though I did unplug it for a little bit.(wich automatically switches it to powersave). The room temp is about 80 (a/c is broke). I also have the p9600 w/NVEDIA 9500 and 7200 rpm hard drive, so this system would probably produce more heat than other configurations.

    CPU - 29 low, 60 high, 48 current
    GPU - 32 low, 70 high, 59 current

Is it best to take the battery out of the laptop if it is plugged into the wall?

I highly doubt that taking the battery out will make any difference. It's only be a pain to do everytime and make the laptop unbalanced and looking weird.
