Did you check disk management and see if the device is there, but without a drive letter? Also, do you feel the drive spinning? Have you tried it on both USB ports? Different cables? Connecting it to different system?

This might be key here. Can you hear the drive spin up when attached to your laptop? If you're using one of these single USB devices, it may be that your laptop USB ports can't supply enough power to get the thing to start, while your desktop USB ports can.

    Hi guys
    thanks for all your efforts.
    latest update.
should have mentioned that the hdd has its own power source.
I have now the following info:

    Yes the disc is spinning
the laptop comes up with the usb icon ( + green tick) in the tray at the bottom right
    new usb cable, no joy
made sure the laptop was in high performance mode (does anyone know how to get this as the default setting when powering up?)
the "my computer" page does not see the hdd at all.

In the past I have been able to use the same hdd with my laptop with no problems

the laptop quite happily connects to my phone

    I am confused !!
