Hey all...Just got my 1340 on Friday...nice looking machine. However I'm having some Blue Screen crashes. I've reformatted the drive twice, to factory condition to get a clean start, but I still get the crashes. I've only recently discovered that it seems to only happen when I unplug it, and run on batteries.
I've changed the power settings from high performance to balanced, and back again. That doesn't matter. It still crashes.
Has anyone else had issues like this? Any suggestions?
-
u have window 7?
Try setting it to power saving.
Most likely it's because the graphic driver. Go dell.com download the latest nvidia driver (not from nvidia but dell).

I'm having exactly the same issue. I have a brand new Studio XPS 1340 (64bit) that will not run for more than 5 mins on battery. It almost doesn't seem to matter what you are doing, it will blue screen reliably. I've loaded the latest drivers and that seemed to make it even more unstable - it would then also crash while plugged in. I restored to the original drivers to I can at least use the machine while plugged in. Has anyone else had this issue and had it successfully resolved? I'm trying to detrmine if this is hardware that should be replaced or just driver issues with the new platform.

Same problem as you guys having with some other techincal faults as mentioned belwo. I received my lappy on Thursday 25...since then problems and problemsss....
Downloaded all the latest drivers and bios...and still same problem of blue screen..........so frustrated...........
Despite promising start....let down with some technical issues.
I am wondering if you guys having some problems with your latop as what I am having.....If yes then can you tell me please how you solve this problems
1). At each side of laptop with dell logo, Amber light not comes on when battery is low, goes straight to flashing amber when battery is critically low...(it says on manual it should come on).
2). In icon tray there is a green logo when you click on it...it gives you option to select between boosted performance and hybrid sli mode...but hybrid sli is grayed you cannot choose that option.
3). On keyboard pad, there is a button right next to insert iwith laptop logo, to choose from different external display...when i connect to hdmi..and use that button to select it...keeps on crashing showing error message of "quick set closing"...and you are stuck with what ever mode of display you chose..button does work anymore.
4). BOY OH BOY......does it get hot or what...use yesterday for 40 mins watching movie...and did it burn my lap or what....man even charger was boiling hot....
Sorry guys for giving you long list....as I have only 2 days left for my refund...therefore I need answers...otherwise I know dell customer serv they wont refund my money if even 1 day is above the time limit.
SAD to see this problem from day 1 -
Well a lot has happened since my initial post. I was wrong about the BSOD only appearing when on battery. I started crashing (like Davodavo said) reliably every 5 minutes whether plugged in or not. I tried restoring from discs, from Dell's built in restore program, tried updating all new drivers after the new installs, and nada.
Dell eventually sent me a new one. It's better, but it does the BSOD every day at least once. I really like this model, but I am considering returning it if it keeps crashing.
Wajj7. I'm afraid I can be much help for your issues other than the Nvidia (green) icon. You can't select the mode from there. Instead select it from the power option...the battery icon in the system tray.
Also, the HDMI work fine on mine, so no help there.
I would definitely complain to Dell. Maybe they'll send you a new one. Good luck with Customer Service though. What a pain. -
Ya thanks lowndes....its pain too see this problems with our lappy......
Spoke to technical dept they said motherboard is faulty.....what the hack....why they sending us faulty machines...no quality control what so ever.
So angry....I hate spending time on ph explainin every dept in dell...with their no communication skill............. -
I have the same problem with all of you. The system cashes when I run on battery. I contacted Dell Support many times but no good result. They said that is the faulty of motherboard. Is that true? I make a clean installation of windows vista 64 bit without installing any driver, the system work well. So I believe that the driver is the problem. May be driver crashed and caused dumps. If anyone who intends to buy this Laptop, never do that, you will feel regretful soon. I hate myself now when choosing the Dell Studio 13. Don't think about replacing with a new one, get a full refund is smart. I'm sure all of Dell Studio 13 using windows vista 64 bit got dumps on battery working.
-
Hamcc...I understand what you saying which is true....
But 1 question...If your laptop is working fine with new installation of vista..why do you need to get a refund....
I am thinking to do samething install new vista and see if it work fine..then I will keep it.....but till then I have returned my system for a refun...and I will place a new order...once I will get my money back.. -
Hi wajj7,
The laptop just worked well when I made clean installation without installing any drivers. Please read my comment carefully, you will know what I'm saying. Once more thing, even if you format the hard drive and make a clean installation after that installing all drivers, the system will be still getting dumps. As I said, it just work well when you don't install any drivers on that but it's impossible. There are no drivers on the laptop, it means your Lappy just look like a brick... I guess the Nvidia chipset driver had problem... I wish Dell used Intel chipset like Studio XPS 16 instead of using Nvidia chipset for Studio 13. You see that Studio 16 is stable when using Intel chipset. I don't live in USA, so get a full refund is very hard. I feel so disappointed with Dell but still waiting for updating new drivers in the future. I have no more choices! -
Sorry to hear that Hamcc...I can imagine what your feeling are....
I had to go through all that..I have to spend 5 hours just on ph to get through to right department.....In my case they are refunding all my moeny back......
When ever I buy laptop.....I put it under all sort of scrutiny.....so that if any failure happens..I will know under return time period..and return it if needed...which I did for my studio xps 13...
But ya...as I said its hard for you to do that now -
I have had 2 Studio XPS's both Blue Screen within 5 minutes of removing the power supply and runing on battery. Has anyone found a solution?? Please help. i love this computer but obviously need it to be able to run on battery.
Thanks,
-T- -
Reformat the computer as soon as you get it. I don't know why, but it makes a huge difference on the sxps1340. I ran it for a month with the configuration it shipped with - I only had 2 crashes but the computer would stall coming out of sleep and blue screen whenever I plugged in an HDMI cable.
After reformatting, the system is BLAZING fast and never crashes. BLAZING. -
Hi jb1007,
I am just trying re-installing Vista 32 on my 1340 before Dell replace it because of it's inability to charge the battery. I am having problems deciding which drivers to install and most importantly in which order. It is not at all clear. Even when your enter your Service Tag number to identify your laptop - it still offers you un-required drivers / applications. It offers 34 drivers / apps for my laptop and I only need about 14 of them.
So - what is the optimum order??
Thanks
Geoff -
Guys,
I've formatted my 1340 more than 20 times in 3 weeks after purchasing. Finally, I know the reason of the BSOD. I took out my memory and left only one bank filled. Then run the Windows. I've 6GB memory, when I run the Windows with 4GB memory, BSOD happened randomly but not with the 2GB memory. Currently I'm asking for the replacement.
For your information, the Dell Memory test software didn't detect any single memory faulty.
I understand the difficulties you have. I think it is worth to try. -
I figured I should post about my experience to add a little balance to the conversation. Seems like on any forum you usually only hear from people who are having problems, which makes it seem like everyone is having problems.
I read a few posts about random crashes on the SXPS13 just after I ordered mine, and I almost cancelled because of it. When I got my computer and it crashed within about 10 mins the first time I used it, I was REALLY worried... but it hasn't crashed since then. Not even once.
I didn't do the clean install. I just dumped some bloatware, updated all the drivers (including NVIDIA), and used the Vista tweak guide to optimize it a bit and I have not had any problems since. (BTW, the heat is annoying and can make it uncomfortable to have on your lap, but I find it much more tolerable when it's on the "Power Saver" power plan). -
i agree with m3conversion i used it for about 10 minutes and it just froze...i was getting quite worried but a whole day since and everythings running smoothly and i still havent reinstalled vista...getting lazy but i did do the vista tweaks
studio xps 1340 crashes only on battery.
