which one would be better for gaming. i want to play the new call of duty when it comes out. both with the icore7 2.8ghz and 4 gigs of ram
-
its the 4830 not 4850 (i think) http://www.hp.com/united-states/campaigns/envy/discover_15.html
but it will be better.. 40nm (4830) vs. 55nm (4670)...

Im going for the HP envy 13 or 15 if its not to pricy.. -
Looks interesting, thanks for the link
-
Yup, the Envy has an HD4830. It'll be stronger than the HD4670 yes, although the Envy also might cost a lot more than the Studio XPS 16.
-
The Envy 13 is going to cost £1,500 in the UK without the battery slice (another £179)
I dread to think what the Envy 15 is going to cost. -
About $1800 starting config in the US.
-
Damn... you can config the 1645 with the 1920x1080 rgb, blue-ray and the i7 820QM for about $1900.
-
yeah... the Envy is banking on the mobility factor though... thin/sleek, under 6 lbs, up to 7 hours of battery life... the SXPS 16 cant touch that (then again, the Envy hasn't been tested to see how well it delivers yet either).
-
thx for the help. i think im going with the studio xps. save a bunch of money

Has the 1645 been tested yet? I know its only a new motherboard+cpu, but still.. i returned a 1640 because it got to hot.. i dont think 1645 is getting any cooler!?
are there any other nice 15" core i7 multimedia laptops coming? Acer, Asus? -
Check out this thread:

As for heat, the Ci7s are much more power efficient than the C2Ds and C2Qs. Most people never stress their CPU on 100% load on the go, so I doubt it will be a problem on battery. While plugged into A/C power, it will probably get quite toasty, so I hope Dell has improved their cooling system. -
Looking at the Envy's..... they have no optical drive!
What madness?!
~Ibrahim~ -
I was also thinking of envy 15 the one thats coming out. But its pricey and no optical drive built in. xps16 isnt a gaming notebook. and I found out that the all new alienware m15x has good bang for the buck.
The envy looks really good but starting price is 1799 USD. The m15x starts at 1499 usd. Also has 3 i7 processors to choose from. But better graphics card 260m gtx! it has optical drive and an option for bluray, and also ddr3 but even slighty faster option of 1333mhz, and all the rest. the looks are great too u can customize all the lights and all. And being an alienware its a gaming notebook for sure. plus it has MXM graphic card setup so if you ever want to upgrade in the future for a better card you can.
Some good things to mention about envy is that it can hold up to 16gb of ram.. but in real life you wont need it and by the time you do there will be much better systems by that time..
Until I save all of my pennies Im going to go for m15x unless something better comes out. -
The Envy has an external DVD drive. Also, "faster" memory has no benefit in any real life performance. For gaming, the 720QM will be the best performance for your dollar, as the increase in speed in the other two models have exponential cost, while giving minimal gains in most games (due to GPU being the limiting factor). For gaming, the new Sager is better value and more powerful than the Alienware.
-
You might want to hold off on the 4830 > 4670 comments for now.
All the literature I have seen for the Envy 15 has stated it uses DDR3 and not GDDR3 for the VRAM.
If that's the case, it will be SLOW. -
Even if it used DDR2 memory, it would still be a heck of a lot faster than the HD 4670.
-
If you look at it, it's supposed to have lots more shaders than the HD4670 and IIRC, clocks are higher. -
-
Oh and desktop replacements usually refer to 17" laptops. -
I usually go by weight and components for desktop replacement, ie. some 15" are heavier than the "lighter" 17". The battery life really isn't surprising considering that the parts used in the Envy are very efficient in power consumption thanks to Intel's shutting down unused cores and ATI's 40nm manufacturing process, plus with the slice battery supplying a fair amount of power. The Dell E6500 w/ 9 cell can match the T500 (w/ 9 cell), MBP (w/ 8 cell), and Envy (w/ 9 cell and slice) and it even has the option of a slice battery to more than double that run time.

#13 U cannot compare dells alienware with Envy 15.. Dells Alienware is gaming branded where as HP is business and sylish branded...
but true, there is more power/$ at dell Alienware, but a lot more styleness (thin, battery etc, material)/$ from HP Envy
In Denmark HP Envy 15 will be cheaper than Dell sxps 16 (with core i7)
Hp Envy (12.000kr. = 2400$)
Dell xps 16 (13.999kr. = 2800$) -
@kundizzle
HP's Envy isn't gaming-branded? What would be the point of the 4830, then?! I mean, it was really about businesses, then they would've picked a much much much slower graphic card (maybe even integrated) to lower the GPU power draw thus increasing battery life.
The Envy is DEFINITELY marketed toward gamers: but it's new because of the size, a size that we don't expect this much power to be accompanied with.
~Ibrahim~ -
#22 its comparable to Macbook Pro's... just PC versions.. They came with 9600m GT which also was a great gaming gfx at that time..
For sure its capable of playing most games, but I woulnt call it gaming branded...
With business-minded i meant for, 3ds max, animations, photoshop and so on.. -
Therefore, it'd be more like a consumer notebook with the ability to game(kinda like the Vaio FW and the SXPS 16), but IMO, would not be "geared" towards gamers.
For the same price as the Envy, you could easily get a more powerful gaming solution by Sager or even Dell/Alienware for that matter. -
@ Kundizzle.
Sorry but your wrong. The all new hp envy 15 is made toward gaming, not in general but great portion of it like the card. You can see proof by youtubing hp envy 15. The hp employee whose describing the hp envy in the video says that it will play most demanding games! So for that being if it will play demanding games, its classy looking notebook with performance for gamers! Watch the youtube video.
The only reason why I compared it to the new m15x alienware is because they are both new! both have i7 and price range is a lil close just alienware makes more sense for games with the all differenct optical drive options and a better gpu card, and a lil better price, plus a lot of people also drool over alienware's looks
Dont get me wrong this new envy is beautiful, very thin, and an exteded battery is superb! it attaches equally to the bottom panel that it looks like a part of the notebook. So you;ll be running 2 batteries with amazing battery life and very thin notebook.
For looks: I like both alienware m15x is different, envy is sorta different but they said it them selfs they stole the design from mac. But both look great just different -
Shall we call it fashionable gaming then?
For the price hike, I mean, over comparable laptops.
The leap from the 4670 (and 4650 in the VAIO FW) to a 4830 doesn't seem justified "just" for the miniscule market for 3DMax and high-level Photoshop.
~Ibrahim~ -
The gaming notebook market is as niche if not more than the business market.
However, I do agree that there is a level of performance added to the Envy, but it doesn't make it a gaming oriented machine either until user benchmarks prove to me it performs as well as gaming oriented notebooks.
If you want to make things simpler, HP never advertised the Envy as a gaming machine AFAIK so if they don't consider it one, we shouldn't either. -
Haha, that's acceptable.
