Hi guys, I just purchased a refurb XPS 1640. Its got pretty good specs for the price. P8700, 4670, 16" RGB 1080p., 4GB, 320 HD. The things it seems to be lacking are:
    1. Backlit keyboard??? I assumed these were standard. Am I wrong?
    2. Bluetooth
    3. Slot loading DVD. It appears to be a tray system???

I love all the other specs on this system and I'm super excited about the screen. I plan on getting an aftermarket bluray drive. So, my question is can I upgrade all of these things on my own? Is the keyboard swappable with a backlit one? Can I add the internal bluetooth card? and can I replace the non-slot loading DVD drive with a slot-loading bluray drive??? Parts seem to be readily available on ebay.

Please let me know if this is possible as I may cancel the order if not. Thanks.

Unless the system is broken or heavily modded..All xps1640s come with a backlit keyboard and slot loading drive..

Great, I hope you are right. I was assuming that, but couldn't be sure as none of the descriptors labelled either as such. So all I would need to do is add a bluetooth card internally and swap out the dvd drive for a bluray. Do you know if you can add the bluetooth card to the 1640 motherboard?

use the fucntion + right arrow to turn on/off the keyboard, it may have just been turned off.

not sure about the internal bluetooth though

Everything you listed can be swapped. BlueTooth is mini PCIe or something, 1 screw and it's in/out. DVD you have to remove the screws holding the motherboard to the chassis and then rip off the top part of the bottom 1/2 of your laptop (part with the speakers, keyboard, touchpad, etc.). Then you release 1 screw for the DVD drive and remove it. Keyboard I think is part of the top 1/2 that I told you to remove, and I haven't removed the speakers' wiring yet so up to you to try it out.

So it sounds like the motherboards are standardized. ie, there will be a spot to connect the bluetooth card on every 1640 even though it was not part of the original order. That would be great. It would allow me to have every extra spec I wanted. I assume I would just need to download the proper drivers after they are installed.

Thanks for the info Fred (and everybody else too), I just got the laptop this morning. Now I just need to order the other parts. Hope the RGB screen is as wonderful as everybody makes it out to be. :)
