I would like to try ununtu on my xps m1530. I started ununtu from cd without installation, but i couldn't enjoy it, because after starting the mouse pad goes insane. How to fix that.
Or ca someone provide me a link to this topic. And there are drivers for video, fi-wi, card reader....for ununtu?
I am not familiar with linux, but it seems interesting this ubuntu

Yeah... its because it lacks touchpad drivers in ubuntu. It's not a big deal. To be able to successfully install Ubuntu, just use a USB mouse.
After you install Ubuntu and download all updates, the touchpad will work.
Drivers for all the things you ask for are available and can be grabbed simply using the update system within ubuntu to download all updates. No need to search for specific drivers.
Nvidia has excellent support for Ubuntu. It is very "fun" to use, though just to keep in mind that it is not a good idea to use it when you are not plugged into an outlet as unlike Windows, Ubuntu does not save battery life all that well and will drain more battery life as opposed to using Vista and 7.
Older version of Ubuntu were more lightweight, but Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 are now really more developed and does punch your battery life more than Windows Vista or 7 Beta. -
God, I like this forum. -
No problem.

Ah, the insane touchpad problem! Ubuntu does actually have synaptics touchpad drivers but they don't work quite right with the defaults, as you can see. So updating won't actually fix it, but there is an easy fix!
You need to modify your boot line in menu.lst (once you've installed Ubuntu).
So...
Open a terminal and type:
Code:sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
Code:title Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-16-generic root (hd0,5) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-16-generic root=UUID=4d1f9d83-796c-4618-bcfe-6125202bf4f4 ro quiet splash i8042.nomux=1 initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-16-generic quiet
Do you get the thing where the brightness changes two points instead of one every time you press FN-arrow as well? I think there's a fix for that too, but I never bothered about it.
All other drivers should work out of the box. I ran Ubuntu as my main OS on my m1530 for ages, no major problems. -
The steps outlined above are not necessary as long as you check for updates after you install ubuntu and it will automatically address them. No need to run those commands unless you just want to fix touchpad and not update anything else, which is silly since you will be checking for any updates for other things after you install ubuntu anyways.

Do you actually know they've fixed the issue now? It wasn't fixed yet in Hardy or Intrepid as of last November, even with latest updates. It's a Dell-specific issue that only crops up when using BIOS version A08 and above.

I use openSUSE and frequent their excellent forum when I have questions.
You should do the same for your Ubuntu questions in the
Ubuntu Forum.
I turn OFF the touch pad after booting into openSUSE as the USB mouse is the preferred way to go.
Go into terminal and type...
Code:$ synclient TouchpadOff=1
Seriously, if you are going to stick with Linux or simply try it out, go to the forum for your version of Linux OS and there you will find the gold.

Visiting the ubuntu forum has a wealth of information.
Once I get home to unpack my 5130 I wont be installing m$ winblows to save my life.
If you want a desktop to beat the vista dreamscene (or what ever its called, which is really just a rehash of active desktop..), make sure you install compiz fusion.Youtube it and see what a real desktop looks like.
