i would stay with 4 gigs but if your upgrading get it from dell because it will be under warranty with your dell products but if its not they wont help you at all with it.

Its easy enough to upgrade the memory yourself - see these instructions if you do:

    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/sxl16/en/sm/memory.htm#wp1180190

As for ordering, if you are going to 6GB, just order x1 4GB. You already have two of the 2GB modules. Bear in mind, you wont be able to utilize the dual-channel aspect since the modules will be different sizes. To do 8GB (x2 4GB SODIMMS) its not really viable. The cost is way high on those (no matter what brand).

I wouldn't order from Dell, way overpriced. As mentioned earlier in this thread - try NewEgg.

Why does it cost so much ($600?) to upgrade from 4GB to 8GB?

The 4Gb SODIMM's have only just come out. Until production is ramped up they will sell for a premium. Give 3-4 months and hopefully they will come down in price.
