    Hello,
I bought Sony FW490 with full hd screen (1920x1080) but after hearing so much about wonderful RGB LED display on Dell, I got one from Dell outlet and now I can compare them both side by side and send one back. To my surprise Sony's screen is a tad brighter, white color is white and red is very accurate too, on Dell screen is dimmer (on full brightness) red is more brownish and white is yellow-greenish.
I was reading this forum for a few months and almost everybody says that RGB screen is very bright, that one can use it on half brightness, but that is not the case with my SXPS16. So is my screen defective?
    Thank you!

Your RGB LED screen is probably defective. Mine is very bright, although I admit I wish the colors were more accurate.

Your screen may not be defective. Next to other screens that are very bright, it might not seem as bright. But you said the Reds looked brownish. That sounds off, mine look really pinkish and way to saturated.

The SONY FW series laptops come with either one or two lamps for the screen. (It is quite stupid, I know). The one lamp screen is rather weak (150 cd/m2) but apparently the one you have, has two lamps, making it a very bright display (350 cd/m2), much brighter than the Dell SXPS 16 LED display (230 cd/m2).
So don't be surprised because Sony's is one of the brightest displays.
My laptop's 16'' screen is very bright for one lamp (210 cd/m2).

I have a question, since you have both of them. The Sony FW490 is advertised that has 16.4'' display and the Dell SXPS 16 that has 16''.

Is the Sony display really 16.4 and bigger than the Dell's?

also remember that Vaios X-Black(Xbrite) screens are one of the best screens on the market. (they are enormous bright with spot on colours). :)

Use a calibration dvd and/or meter (if you have access to it) to set both screens closest to D6500 and then judge. I bet you the Sony screen doesn't have a 100% color gamut :)

yes, diagonally Sony screen measures 16.5"

5150Joker, I honesty don't know exactly what is color gamut, but I can clearly see that VERY unfortunately, colors are way off on Dell's screen and it sucks, because I love the lighted keyboard and touch controls and touch pad feels better on Dell too ... right now I have very tough decision to make - which laptop to send back.

I can not imagine how anyone would need/want a screen "brighter" than the XPS 16. I have to turn it down.

Because I spend a lot of time outside - brighter is better. And that what I've heard so many times here and in all reviews - RGB LED screen is very bright, most of users actually have to turn the brightness down, but it is not the case, what bugs me the most the fact that the colors displayed very off.
I tried to install various icc profiles but I don't see any visible changes at all.

i dont know why people are afraid of the WLED screen. (i nearly consider (if i could) taking back my £300 (lot of money, yeah) for the RGBLED and go for the WLED)

WLED is really good enough :) (and a loooot cheaper and easier to set accurate colours)

The illuminated keyboard is good spec but I would pick the one with the better screen (not the brightest). After all the screen is all that matters, as you would spend all the time looking at it. Which one do you like more?
Play a slideshow with many photos and then try some HD videos to see which you would prefer.
I suspect the rest of the specs are similar.
Furthermore the Sony's screen is bigger than the Dell's and I would assume better quality laptop.
Nevertheless, if the laptops are very close, don't be bothered too much, in the end it's not like the day and night. I mean it won't make your work much worse or better.
Make a decision and enjoy it.

well, studio 16 dot have the brighest rgb led of dells, dell stuido 17 has 330 max nit rgb led screen, one can assume presicion use the equal or better ones. the test result can be found on notebookcheck.net.

imo, rgb led on studio 17 is grade A, on studio 16 is only grade C quality.

What are you talking about? Studio 17 doesn't have an RGB LED display.

If the Sony screen works for you, then return the Dell and be done with it.

On the Dell US site this is the top end option for the Studio 17:

So definitely not an option for US customers. Guess you Canadians finally got something US customers don't.

I have both the Sony FW 290 Full HD screen and the Studio XPS 13 WLED screen. Although they are different size screens, I can tell you that while the Sony is an excellent bright screen the Dell WLED screen is definitely brighter in comparison. In fact I usually keep the Dell on step 7 of the 16 total brightness scale.
