Looking at getting one of these... what are the temps under load and idle of this laptop (of the cpu and the gpu)?
-
My SXPS1640 with P8600 @ 24-26C room temp, since BIOS A06-up:
Idle temps:
CPU: 34-43C
GPU: 40-45C
(A bit of explanation: The internal fan seems to start spinning (at its lowest speed) when CPU reaches about 42-43C. When it spins, it can lower my CPU temps up to 34C. Then at that point, the fan would turn off, prompting the CPU temps to slowly go up again.
BIOS versions prior to A06 allowed the CPU of my laptop to achieve temps as low as 29-30C at idle, because the fan seems to be always on that time.)
- - -
Load/CPU stress test:
CPU: 66-67C
GPU: not sure, but the highest I've seen it go is ~73C
[There's about 1-2C temp difference between my two CPU cores.)
EDIT:
I'm using CoreTemp and Everest. Both are reporting temperatures 5C higher than what I would get from HWMonitor. -
the newest bios is a07 now out on 5/18.
-
Might be a good idea to also state what program you are using to report the temps as all of them seem to vary.
-
anybody else care to share their temps?

BIOS A05
1640 XPS with P8600:
Idle=CPU 27-30C
Under max load for 15 minutes using OTHEROS=CPU 60-63C -
I was watching streaming video last night with my laptop sitting on my bed (nothing under it) and the mobo got up to 73C (the CPU and GPU around 63C).
After I finished, I picked it up and put it on my desk and within about 15 seconds the temps dropped to about 50C.
Still too warm for my liking, its not that I'm worried about damage to components (should I be?), its more of a comfort factor.
sicilianoNJ, what have you done to idle at those temps? I JUST turned on my computer a minute ago, and came here to post a message and I'm at 34/44 for CPU/GPU.
Done any BIOS, driver, undervolting changes? -
I havent done a thing, just got it 1 week ago....the VERY most it got up to is 63C like I said, and that was under a OTHOROS stress test for 15 mins straight...normal use even with many apps open (I dont play games tho) is maybe 45C?
-
Wierd. I got mine a few days ago and it sounds like its higher than that.
You don't want to download Everest and do a comparison for me do you? Right now Everest is telling me I'm at 49C, and I have done absolutely nothing but browse the web, that sounds pretty idle to me... -
That sounds really high to me...then again I was using HWMonitor and not Everest....I may do that when I get home, when I browse the web im in the mid 30C's
-
I've had mine for about a week and a half now and I love it. Out of the box, before undervolting the CPU would max at 63C under 100% CPU load. After, 100% would give a max of 55C.
Right now I've got 2 Firefox tabs open, HW monitor and am downloading 2 torrents and I'm sitting at 36C CPU and the GPU at 47. I do heavy Photoshop, no games so that might be different than your use. Undervolting helps a lot and I've only done the highest multiplier so far. -
RWUK: Is that 36C with undervolting changes made? Because my CPU is almost 10 degrees higher with almost the exact same things running.
*EDIT: I know its very subjective, but do you consciously notice heat from under your left hand? Everything else about this machine is great except that spot. -
RWUK what did you set the highest multiplier at if u dont mind?
-
Shifty, 36C is with undervolting changes but of the 4 performance state multipliers listed in RM Clock, I've only worked the highest (9x). I plan to change the others but wanted a good week or so of proven stability before I mess with it more. I've also got the P8600.
For those who haven't seen it The Undervolting Guide is a very constructive way to spend some time.
My highest multiplier is at .9500v. It ran stable for 3.5 hours at that setting. I also have the Super LFM enabled too. -
I'm actually quite disappointed with this thing right now, its noticably uncomfortable to keep my hand on the keyboard for more than a minute. I really don't get it, it wasn't nearly this bad yesterday...
Also, if I do some undervolting and decide its still no good, does that void any chance of returning this machine? -
It shouldn't void the warranty. Just make sure you return it to the factory settings and you should be fine. Plus messing with the CPU voltage is out of the realm of your normal user so I doubt it'll be the first thing the Dell reps think of if you do decide to return it.
Have you downloaded Orthos and HW Monitor? They're just a simple .exe application, no install needed. What do your temps read? They sound unusually high if the palm rest is that uncomfortable. -
yeah all these people talking about uncomfortable heat on touchpad/keyboard is weird...i have nothing NEAR uncomfortable, its barely even warm
-
Your HD is very high too..the absolute highest ive seen during normal operation on mine is 36C...what drive did you get?
-
The 250GB one.
Like I said, the comfort level is completely subjective. I might just be a wuss, but honestly the left side is noticably warm (and having my hand there constantly just isn't going to fly). Let me see if I can give you an example of how warm it is: its kind of like a cupcake thats had about 5 minutes to cool down after coming out of the oven. It's the first thing you think of when you touch it, but its not "hot" anymore. The left side on the other hand, completely fine in my opinion.
What exactly is under the left side and track pad? -
I'll agree, your hd is pretty warm. You have the 250GB it looks like, I have the 500GB 7200rpm and have never seen it past 38C.
When I think of uncomfortable heat, I think of getting too close to an open flame. The palm rest of my SXPS feels warmer than that of my old Vaio but it's by no means uncomfortable. I do notice that the warmest place seems to be near the top left of the track pad. I don't know what's under there. I've read the wireless card can make a lot of heat though. -
What is that thing in the bottom right (which would be under the left side from the top)?

hard drive

Room temps = 30-32c
Idle CPU temps = 34-36c
Load CPU temps before under clocking = 58-60c
Load CPU temps after under clocking = 52-53c
(Idle?) GPU temps = 35-38c
Load GPU temps = 55-56c
Note:
Idle = Only Vista Aero running.. doing nothing other than HWMonitor
Load CPU = 20 min to 3 hour Otheros Stress tests. Temps go constant after about 1 min of starting. Conversely, about 30 secs after stopping, temp goes to idle temp.
Load GPU = 1+ hour of gaming on the laptop to reach max possible temp
I thought my temps would be higher with my weather conditions (hot and humid mostly in Mumbai, India) but I'm surprised with the results.
I'll run the same tests while in Seattle next week where the room temp is 20c in the day. I wonder if the test results will be affected -
JAnderton, have you dont any undervolting or Bios changes?
-
Best thing for anyone wondering if it's too hot to live with or if they should return it. Do you like the machine otherwise? If no, send it back.
If yes, do the undervolting at your highest multiplier and see what difference that makes. It's time consuming but easy to do and well worth it if you decide to keep the notebook. If you find it noticeably improved, work with the other multipliers, make sure you've got Vista optimized to run only what it needs when it needs it and you should be happy. If you're still not liking the difference then it's best to move on.
Just a logical IMO for those who seem dissatisfied. -
Edited post #2.

Here are my min and max temps after playing gta iv (which obviously throttled). They are unususally high. Any recommendations?
Ambient temps are 30cAttached Files:

Sorry for the mis-type
No BIOS changes though -
I replaced my thermal paste with Artic Silver 5 and my idle temps are now 30c and my max temps are high 30's
what are load and idle temps for cpu and gpu of studio xps 16
