For an XPS it has one crappy video card. Should be able to hit at least 5000 3dmark06 on stock. - that's my opinion.

As, a 1530 owner, I don't like Touchpad at times..it can be fussy.
    (Reinstalling the drivers helps).

I know the 8600 GPU, is prone to be faulty...and when or even if that happens...I know I won't be happy about that!

Other than that...I think I'm good. The other things I don't like..would be the fault of the *user* (me)

why anyone really would care about what 3dmark06 says is beyond me
    I got a 4855 score with mine, im sure if i put a T9400 it'll be 5000.

Only negative I got with mine is the USB port layout.
the 2 right next to the power adaptor, and the 1 on the right just seems out of place, would rather that one be somewhere in the back.
And i'd rather have more USB ports.
The DVD Drive's feed system could be better too.

I agree, real life performance should be more important than what is mainly a general guideline.

I don't recall every having done this for my 1530..I just didn't feel it was necessary. I'm happy with my little Red powerhorse, as is! :D

did they ever fix the problem with the touchpad malfunctioning after closing and reopening the lid when you have it set to standby?

I didn't really like the magnetic lid vs having an actual latch.

It was loud and hot and had poor battery life.

I didn't like the keyboard either, hated it actually. The SXPS 16 has a better one.

It's too think, compared to a Macbook.

I liked it in general, though and would probably still have it if I hadn't switched to a Macbook for a while.

WOW Genius! made me laugh for a while :D

ive had some really good experiences with my xps m1530, im only sad this 8600 doesnt give much power... but oh well, it still plays nice tho!

ive had a motherboard, dvd drive, heatsink and palmrest replacement in less than a month, the only thing they havent replaced is the screen, because it works flawlessly, its a beautiful screen, but this is practically a new computer :D
and i couldnt be happier with my purchase, i love my m1530! ( even if it has failed so much heheh)

( oh and im gonna get 1 more replacement for my heatsink and a new palmrest, since this one came with horrible bumps and one side actually pops out... )

I liked the one I started out with. The only thing I see "wrong" with it is that it's getting a bit long in the tooth. A 2 year old design that has had only minor improvements? Dell is starting to try and get rid of them judging by the price cuts.

The vents, could of placed them on the sides or done something so this can actually be placed on my lap!

The slot drive could be improved, really slow sucking in the disc sometimes, gotta push it in.

The touchpad starts lagging when the laptop heats up.

    That's about it.. :D

Surprisingly, yes! In BIOS A08 if I recall correctly.

Get one soon if you want one because they are phasing them out; they're no longer available at all here.

i actually basically traded a Gateway P-7811FX for this Dell, and even though its weaker than the FX, i like it more for the application and smaller form-factor.

Oh..I didnt realize the 1530 wasn't available in certain parts of the country anymore :( I understand the phasing out, it's just too bad.

I really love the 1530 except the touch sensitive buttons which do not seem as responsive as regular buttons but all manufacturer's are going with the touch sensitive design so can't complain too much.
The biggest issue i have is with the placement of the hard drive indicator LED. I hate not being able to see it at a glance when the laptop is in my lap. Only way i can see it is by tilting the laptop & I'd rather have it in a place where i can see it all the time, my old inspiron 1420 had it by the hinge and i could see it easily all the time. Another smaller grip is the blue led's right next to the touch sensitive buttons, they don't seem real legible, again i prefer the LED layout on the 1420 even though the XPS 1530 beats it by a HUGE margin in all other areas. Another big let down is the huge brightness difference on the LED screen from brightness position number seven to brightness position number 8 (maximum). The max position is way too bright and the number seven seems low. A setting between number 7 & number 8 would have been perfect. Even with these minor issues i would buy it again in a heart beat. I like mine so much that i ended getting another one for my wife :)
The best part in my opinion is the low weight in a 15.4 form factor and a reasonably good (comparatively speaking) video card.

LOL...I was hoping they would get it straight w/in 3 years..When my 3 year warranty is up! :p :D

I have no idea where I will be in three years! I think I will still have my 1530, and quite possibly have another laptop also! :D *cough*Adamo13. :D

Oh and don't forget that bonus year given to us 1530 owner's on the faulty GPU's :D

    hee hee!

One thing, I don't like is that sometimes my *backspace* key sticks..a mere annoyance, that's all... :D

    few things

    1) bad, really bad touchpad, really wish it was possible to switch it out for Synaptics
    2) no gigabit lan, simply don't understand why
    3) wi-fi detector doesn't work with other wi-fi cards
    4) slot loading drive, very limited choices in drive replacement, blu-ray drive replacement cost $700 from dell, about 400-500 for ebay
    5) no esata
    6) more of dell issue, dell for over year denying 64bit support, while 1530 little brother 1330 had full driver support
    7) poor choice for audio chip (sigmatel)
    8) dell not supplying correct audio driver, Sigmatel as company has been gone for over 2 years, they should supply correct IDT driver

i would like to hear some commments from members here.

I wish it didn't have the Media Direct button, doesn't happen often but I have accidentally hit it instead of power and I have never actually needed to use it. Also, I wouldn't mind having a bigger trackpad.

    Complaints:

-The dimpled area above the keyboard (where the speakers are) attracts little bits of dust and crud, and is near impossible to clean.

-The express-card slot filler is a little loose.

-No esata. Would have been nice.

That's about it. I have no complaints about the trackpad, keyboard, touch-buttons etc. They all work perfectly on mine.

    I don't like the following:
    1. Remote sticks out of Express card slot slightly.
    2. 9 Cell Battery should be a little more comfortable on a lap (I do like how it lifts the computer)
    3. 1920x1200 Screen quality (a little sparkly)
    4. Touchpad
    5. Slot Loading DVD drive
    6. XP driver support (all drivers are on dells site, just makes it had to find)
    7. Magnet based latching system.

Mostly the same as everyone else here.

    - lack of gigabit ethernet was a bit of a shock for a XPS laptop. I've owned economy laptops from the early part of this decade with gigabit ethernet. I'm not sure how Dell missed this.

    - I wish the intakes weren't exclusively on the bottom of the laptop.

    - Touchpad is crap - again, why did they deviate from synaptics?

    - Poor/sluggish 64-bit support.

    - Positioning of the USB ports on the right, so close to the power cord.

    - HD light in a place where no one will ever see it.

    - Web cam is the same crappy one found in every other laptop--I wish it were a bit more upscale/premium.

That said, overall I'm quite pleased.

My 1530 is one of the best laptops I've ever used. Having said that, my pet peeves are:

    * Lack of a backlit keyboard

    * Lack of a "pointing stick" (like the latitude, ThinkPads, etc)

    * Thermal design. The bloody thing radiates too much heat to your hands/lap.

    * Port location. Sound ports in the front are especially annoying.

Incidentally all of these problems are fixed on the Latitudes/Precisions, but those lines introduce their own problems, such as higher cost points, less flexibility in specs, no slot loading DVD, etc.

    For me-
    Lack of gigabit ethernet

Screws that strip when you try and change the wireless card....(Now I have to send it into the depot)

    Lack of eSata port

#1 I hate the left side of my laptop, where HDMI connector is. ITS VERY HOT left there
#2 it should have at least 4 USB ports
    #3 stupid camera
#4 dell didnt put enough thermal pasta on my cpu and gpu. and i'm too lazy to change it
#5 i need backlit keyboard at night. the light i have to use is the lcd display :(
