I ordered a xps 13 off the outlet and it should be coming in tomorrow. What should I do when I first get this? I read I should install the newest bios? What else?

First, install your favorite security software with the latest definitions.

Second, remove the bloatware from your computer.

    Next, update Windows and drivers.

    Defrag your system.

    Install programs.

    Clean up temp files.

    Defrag again.

Personally I like to do a clean install of windows on Dell machines, but that may be overkill. It also depends on if you have an actual Windows install disc, or if you have a disc image (which will just put all of the garbage back when you restore your system).

Exactly, and also check out the hardware, such as Card reader, USB Ports, HDMI ports CD drive, etc.... I got one that had a bad Media Card Reader (which required the whole motherboard & video card to be replaced with it).

    All good tips!

I found specifically with the sxps 1340 I needed to do a clean install of Windows. Boot time was horrendously slow no matter how much I tweaked the system and everytime I plugged in an HDMI cable, the system would crash. If everything seems to be working though, the above tips will get you going in the right direction.

Also, be sure to do a thorough look over of your new lappy, to make sure there isn't any problems on the exterior...or anything that you would need to contact Dell for! :D

Let it run for a whole day with intermittent power on/off cycle to emulate heavy use. Test all the ports, card reader and dvd drive. Test the wifi and bluetooth (if included). If your laptop lasts for the day then it's safe to say it'll hold up well.
